AN electron diffraction s t u d y has been made of the synthetic polypeptide poly-~methyl-L-glutamate in the ~-form. F o r t y - o n e reflexes were obtained corresponding to a hexagonal cell with the periods a-~11.96 A, c=26.8 A. The projection of the potential on the basal plane was plotted from 15 equatorial reflexes. The ~-helical conformation 18/5 was clearly revealed on it. The distribution of the side-chain glutaminic acid residues was determined from the projection of the potential b y calculation of the amplitude and geometrical anylysis. The appearance of extra-meridional reflexes has been a t t r i b u t e d to disorientation of the side chains with respect to one another a n d to the helical axis. *A STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF ISOMERISM IN A PENDANT RADICAL ON INTRA. DIPOLE moments have been determined for the homologous series, polyalkylacrylate. polyvinylacetate, polyvinylpropionate, p o l y v i n y l b u t y r a t e and their hydrogenated monomer analogues. Application of the statistical theory of polarization permitted determination of the correlation parameters characterizing the intramolecular interaction in the polymers. W i t h polymethacrylate and polyvinylaeetate and the higher homologues of these two series as examples it has been shown t h a t isomerism of the side-chain radical affects the intramolecular interaction in these polymers. The diminished i n t r a m o l e c u l a r interaction of polyvinylacetate and other homologues of this series is associated with a greater mobility of the side-chain polar radical. INVESTIGATION of the infra-red spectra of polyfluorochloroethylene aged in air and in vacuum a t 270, 300, 330 and 350°C showed t h a t ageing in vacuum is accompanied b y degr a d a t i o n of the polymer with the formation of double bonds. Temperature changes do not affect the degradation mechsnism. Ageing in air leads to oxidation of the polymer with the formation of acid fluorides a n d chlorides. On hydrolysis of these groups (at 330 °) acid groups are formed. ELECTRON-MICROSCOPE INVESTIGATION POLYMETHYLMETHACRYLATE
