T
he past year saw many changes and challenges for all health care providers. We now need to focus on strengthening our position and partnership with our colleagues. AANP has increased its membership to over 48,000, and we have hired an expert team of lobbyists to work on behalf of nurse practitioners. While this success is monumental in itself, it is not the end of our work, only the beginning. As we move farther into 2014, we need to focus on building bridges with other health care providers, especially physician colleagues. Changes of the magnitude that we saw in the health care system and model last year bring with them anxiety and uncertainty about the future. Rather than allow this to overwhelm us, we need to address the uncertainty head-on through extensive and repeated communication with those who are affected by the changes. The challenge is analogous to government responsibilities regarding bridge upkeep. Inspectors may document their findings, but unless the government funds repairs, the bridges will fall into disrepair and potentially collapse. So it is with health care. If we are willing to address the issues as they arise and work collaboratively with our physician colleagues to overcome the difficulties that confront us as a whole, we will all be successful. If we choose to be confrontative rather than collaborative, we are doomed to failure. Failure equates to poor outcomes for our patients—something no health care provider wants. So as bridge builders, let us continue to work harmoniously with all health care providers to improve patient outcomes through collaboration. It is time for all of us, regardless of which profession we espouse, to build bridges that will result in improved outcomes for our patients. Welcome to 2014!
