JAY ARTHU R MYERS DEDICA TION

American College of Chest Physic ians with devotion and distinc tion. The Colleg e, during that time, develo ped into a worldw ide medical specialty society with 8,324 members presently situate d in 91 countr ies and, under the editor ship of Dr. Myers, the journal has grown in stature along with it. The Board of Regen ts of the Colleg e has been alert to the new develo pment s in the specialty of diseases of the che. t, both in cardiova cular and pulmo nary disease s and the pages of the journa l have been rnade available to the scientist. throug hout the world to report their finding s to the 11,000 subscribers. Reques ts for reprint s of articles publis hed in Diseases of the Chest have exceeded the expect ations of author s; those request<; have corne from practic ally every country in the world. . The first recipie nt of the Colleg e 'Medal , In 1947, in recogn ition of hi. many contributions to the campa ign agains t tubercUl.osis, was Dr. Jay Arthur l'vIyers. It wa ql1lte proper that he should have been singled out for this distinc tion, as the early endeavors of the Ameri can Collea e of Chest Physicians and its predec essor, the Federa tion of .\meric an Sanato ria, were largely conce rned with tubercu losis. Since then, distinguished scientists in all field. of chest hout the world have diseases from throlw b been honore d with this covete d award. In

1959, upon the celebra tion of the Silver :\nnive rsary of the ,\meric an College of Chest Physicians, Dr. Myers was commissioned to write the Hi tory of the College. It is a wonde rful and impressive volume, written in the inimita ble tyle long associated with the publica tions of this distinguishe d . cienti t. Should you be fortuna te enough to pos. e' a copy, treasur e it, because it is "out of print." In arrying out the respon ibilities of the Manag ing Editor of Diseases of the Chest, I had the good fortune to be closely associated with a dedica ted and unders tanding Editor- in-Chi ef. It was a distinct pleasure to cooper ate with Dr. Myel' in bringin g the journa l to the membe rs of the College and to the thousa nds of subscriber. in all parts of the world. Diseases of the Chest is now in its 34th year of publication and in all of these Years, it has been published despite restrictions on withou t interr~lption the supply of paper during the war years. "e are happy that Dr. Myers will continue to serve the College ancl the journal as Con. ultant in Tuberc ulo is and we are proue! to have his name appea r on .the masthe ad of the journa l as E(lIlo1" ElIle1'ltus. This Jay Arthur I[yers Dedication Issue is a tribute to a great scientist and a wonderful friend and I feel privile, red to COIltribute these fe\-\' word.
