AAN 2002 Annual Meeting Catherine Gilliss

P

lans are well under way for the 2002 Annual Scientific Session of the Academy, “Closing the Gap in Health Disparities: Creating an Action Agenda for Nursing.” The meeting will be held at the Registry Hotel in Naples, Florida, October 31–November 2, 2002. This year’s Planning Committee, cochaired by Catherine Gilliss and Janet Allan, includes a broad representation of fellows who are actively working to develop a program that includes the development of a policy action agenda on dis-

parities. The opening plenary session will feature professor David Williams of the University of Michigan, who will offer an organizing framework for thinking about health disparities. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) panel that is examining disparities in access to care. A panel discussion of notables from outside the discipline will follow his talk to offer more specific comments on disparities. Then, we intend to organize the meeting attendees into 4 working groups (Research/Theory, Policy, Education,

and Practice) to address forthcoming IOM recommendations on the elimination of disparities. The closing plenary session will feature professor Martha Hill, also an IOM panel member, who will report on our proposed action agenda. A second closing plenary is also being planned. The Academy’s expert panels are being solicited for help with the program. We hope to see you in sunny Naples for an exciting program in a beautiful setting. Mark your calendars now! 䡲
