Aberdeen orders fleet of 15 hydrogen fuel cell double-decker buses in European JIVE project

A

berdeen in Scotland, UK has signed a contract for 15 hydrogen fuel cell powered double-decker buses, which will be added to its existing fuel cell bus fleet. The city buses will be operated by First on the 19 route, from Culter (Peterculter) to Tillydrone. The Aberdeen deployment is part of the Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles in Europe (JIVE), which aims to roll out 140 fuel cell buses in five European countries by the end of 2022 [see the News Feature in FCB, February 2017]; the sister JIVE2 project will deploy a further 150+ buses across seven countries [March 2018, p2]. London and Birmingham will follow Aberdeen, with Dundee and Brighton & Hove also partners in JIVE2. (Aberdeen claims to be the first city in the world to deploy a fuel cell double-decker fleet, although London recently made a similar claim [June 2019, p2].) The project is being funded by Aberdeen City Council, the EU-supported Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking

(FCH2 JU), and the Scottish Government with an investment of about £500 000 (US$625 000) per vehicle, building on initial research funding contributed by the Scottish Cities Alliance. The buses have been built by Wrightbus in Northern Ireland, which last year was selected as the sole supplier of double-decker buses in the UK under JIVE; last autumn the company unveiled its StreetDeck double-decker fuel cell electric bus [December 2018, p3]. The new Aberdeen buses will complement the city’s existing fleet of 10 fuel cell buses [March 2019, p2]. Areva Energy Storage is rebranded as Helion

F

rench company Helion Hydrogen Power has been announced as the new brand name of Areva Energy Storage, capitalising on 20 years of expertise and experience in the field of hydrogen and fuel cells. The established manufacturer of low- and highpower PEM fuel cell stacks and integrated systems will strengthen its marketing strategy around new products dedicated to stationary applications (such as fuel cell gensets, backup power, hydrogen energy storage) and heavy-duty mobility (rail, maritime, inland shipping). Helion also provides project management services. Helion has been functionally Areva Energy Storage since 2013, but the change of brand is in line with the management’s desire to accelerate the company’s industrial evolution.

At the end of 2018 the company initiated its industrialisation plan, which will see the commissioning of a modern production unit dedicated to an automated stack assembly line by the end of 2019. This powerful industrial tool will produce the equivalent of 500 stacks per annum by 2022, and contribute to cutting production costs by some 66%. Helion’s Greenergy Box™, a fully integrated electrolyser and fuel cell system, has been installed in locations including the city of La Croix-Valmer, near Saint-Tropez on the Mediterranean coast [FCB, August 2012, p9], and as part of the University of Corsica’s MYRTE test platform [June 2014, p8].
