PULP & PAPER VERACEL AWARDS MAJOR CONTRACTS Metso and Aker Kvaerner have secured major orders for the new greenfield Veracel Celulose SA pulp mill in Brazil which is due to start up in mid 2005. Metso Paper will supply a complete woodyard system. Metso Paper’s 25 million delivery includes a wood processing system for eucalyptus wood produced in Veracel’s forest plantations. The system, which will be one of the largest in the world, will include two chipping lines, a chip handling system as well as a bark and fuel handling system. Aker Kvaerner’s Pulp & Paper unit will supply Veracel with the boiler island. The 100 million boiler order consists of a recovery boiler and a bark-fired power boiler. Kvaerner Power will supply the RECOX recovery boiler rated at 4000 tons dry solids/day, and a HYBEX bubbling fluidized bed boiler rated at 81 MWth. The design, project management and manufacturing of critical pressure parts will be done in Tampere, Finland, with local procurement, engineering and construction site management from the Aker Kvaerner do Brasil office in Curitiba. The Andritz Group was chosen to supply the mill’s fibre line (see page 10 for full details).

EU AID FOR UPM-KYMMENE PAPER MILL The European Commission has approved 24 million in aid for the UPM-Kymmene Shotton Paper Mill located in North Wales, UK.

Last year, UPM-Kymmene was awarded financial support from the UK Government’s Waste and Resources Action Programme to stimulate new paper recovery from the municipal waste stream, and to increase UK recycling rates, in line with EU targets. UPMKymmene will provide 127 million of the 175 million total investment. UPM-Kymmene expects to commission the new recycled fibre pulp facility in November 2003, with full production by April 2004.

WEYERHAEUSER REACTS TO MARKET DOWNTURN Weyerhaeuser Co is restructuring its Dryden, Ontario operations to meet changed market conditions for its forest products. The Dryden sawmill will close permanently and the pulp and paper mill workforce will be reduced. These steps are part of Weyerhaeuser’s efforts to remain competitive and to match production to its order levels. Meanwhile the company’s Plymouth pulp, paper and packaging mill is taking two weeks of downtime, which may be extended depending on market conditions.

ABITIBICONSOLIDATED REBUILDS PAPER MACHINE Voith Paper is to convert Abitibi-Consolidated Inc’s PM 14 at Alma, Quebec from newsprint to coated groundwood. The rebuild will target sections from the former to the reel. Voith Paper will also provide erection supervision, start-up support and training services. Start-up of the rebuilt 8360 mm wide machine is scheduled for May 2004.

EKA BUILDS BRAZILIAN BLEACHING PLANT Eka Chemicals, Sweden is building a chlorine dioxide generation plant at the Bahia Sul Celulose pulp mill in Mucuri, Brazil. Eka will invest US$5 million in the process plant, which will supply chlorine dioxide to the pulp mill bleaching plant. Construction work started in June and the plant is scheduled to be on stream by autumn 2004.

OIL & GAS HHI TO BUILD OFFSHORE PLATFORM Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has won a US$220 million turnkey order for an offshore platform from India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd (ONGC). The 14 000 ton gas compression platform will be installed 160 km west of Mumbai, India. HHI will undertake engineering, procurement, installation and construction. The platform construction work will be carried out simultaneously with the reconstruction of four nearby platforms. The new platform will increase the production in Bombay High South Basin from 70 000 barrels per day to 124 000 bpd.

FLUOR, AMEC WIN AUSTRALIAN OFFSHORE CONTRACT Fluor Corp and AMEC plc are to provide front-end engineering and design work and related services for a floating oil production facility off Australia’s western coast. The S$58 million award includes the option for an
