About the cover illustration

THE OSSICLES OF THE MIDDLE EAR In this month’s issue of the Journal, we are pleased to present one of our occasional series, Seminars of the University of Minnesota. In June of 1998, Dr Jerome Klein, of the Maxwell Finland Laboratory for Infectious Diseases at Boston University, presented the Lewis Wannamaker Memorial lecture, named for a streptococcologist at Minnesota who was a prominent contributor to our understanding of the epidemiology of streptococcal diseases and their immunologic complications. Dr Klein reviewed the impact of antibiotic resistance on the management of acute suppurative otitis media, and he has kindly updated those remarks for a brief review to be found on page 220. This month’s cover illustration was made from three separate images of the middle ear’s ossicles, taken from a late-nineteenth-century natural history atlas.* Dale E. Hammerschmidt, MD Editor-in-Chief
