ABRASIVE CYLINDER FOR DERMABRASION

By D. C. BODENHAM, F.R.C.S.

Frenchay Hospital, Bristol THERE is a choice of instruments for dermabrasion, most of which are made to fit on a standard dental handpiece and are rotated at a speed of 5,000 to 25,000 revs. per min. An attempt has been made to design a cutting cylinder which is safe to use, and combines the advantages of the varied types available. Basically, it is a hollow-machined light alloy cylinder with rounded shoulders and coated with silicon carbide granules securely bonded to stand sterilising by autoclave or boiling.

The grade of granules can be suited to the operator, but personal experience has proved the effectiveness of Grade No. 24 for speeds in the order of 5,000 revs. per min. The rounded shoulders effectively prevent the risk of deep cuts occurring at the margin of the treated area, and allow a smooth shelving edge. It also permits the cylinder to be used edge-on for less accessible areas. The cylinder is easily cleaned by rotation in water and the granules have a useful cutting life. The illustration is full scale. The cylinder is made by Chas. Thackray Ltd., Io Park Street, Leeds, I, who would provide alternative sizes of cylinder and gradings of grit coating to suit particular needs.
