APPLICATI Urethane races onto automotive scene ULTRATHANE” 5465 is challenging the top slot for structural panels and parts traditionally held by glass reinforced polyester (GRP). Designed for spraying in open mould fabrication, Ultrathane 5465 is a fastcure structural urethane with excellent impact resistance and engineered properties similar to reinforced thermoplastics, says manufacturer Futura Coatings. Thanks to its fast cure and rapid demould cycles, and convenient 1:l mix ratio, the material is being used by car maker Jaycor Inc to fabricate automotive body parts and accessories. For example, parts are being made to customize Ford Mustangs. According to the company, Ultrathane 5465 offers dramatically improved performance over moulded GRP, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), injection moulded parts or other conventional automotive materials. The rapid production time also contributes to reduced labour costs. Best of all, says Futura, Ultrathane 5465 is environmentally-friendly (100% solids) and has reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions compared with glass reinforced polyester. Accidents cut after switch to GRP flooring FAILURE of aluminium and open-mesh steel decking to meet required safety standards in its production areas, has led Silver Springs Soft Drinks Co, of Folkstone, UK, to implement a replacement programme using glass reinforced polyester (GRP) safety flooring from Allibert. Safety had been a problem in production areas where floors were permanently running wet both with water and a soapy material. In addition, machine operators reported underfoot discomfort. The solution came in the form of the Alligrid standard range of access and safety flooring. An open-top rectangular mesh design manufactured in isophthalic resin was selected; a material highly resistant to corrosion and incorporating an unbroken network of glass hbres. This combination is claimed to provide a stable hygienic environment, together with exceptional mechanical

strength, whilst the use of silica chippings embedded in the panels’ surface provides a secure safety surface, says Allibert. The flooring was cut and assembled on site and is claimed to be nonconductive and provide good electrical and thermal insulation. According to Silver Springs works engineer,

FRP gear case challenges A FIBRE reinforced plastic (FRP) gear case for traction motors of broadgauge diesel locomotives in India has been jointly developed by RRL, Permali Wallace Ltd, and BHEL, all based in Bhopal, India. Weighing only 130 kg, the lightweight and corrosion-free FRP gear case is expected to offer several

advantages over the conventional steel versions. The latter are made by welding and bending 6 8 mm sheets of low carbon steel (St-42). They therefore require lifting facilities for mounting and demounting, for greasing and other maintenance work. The heavy weight of

steel the case is also a potential hazard; violent jerks and impacts can cause its detachment from the traction motor. Low carbon steel is also susceptible to corrosion and failures in the weld joints which can lead to leakage of lubricant. M/S Permali Wallace; fax: + 9I- 755-550504.
