DESALINATION
Abengoa to develop Saudi solar powered desal plant
T
he world’s first large-scale solar powered desalination plant is to be developed in Saudi Arabia by Abengoa. The firm has won a US$130 million contract, with newly formed Advanced Water Technology, to develop the 60 000 m3/day plant. The plant will supply Al Khafji City in North Eastern Saudi Arabia, ensuring a constant water supply throughout the year. The photovoltaic plant will have a system to optimize power consumption and a pretreatment phase to reduce the high level of salinity and the oils and fats present in the region’s seawater. The contract will boost Abengoa’s desalination capacity to nearly 1.5 million m3/day, enough to supply 8.5 million people around the world. Other major Abengoa projects include the Barka desalination plant in Oman and a solar energy plant in Abu Dhabi. This latest project is AWT’s first in desalination water production. The company plans to expand its activities to include water reuse and water management.

Water Co LLC has received a letter of award for an international tender to design, build, own and operate an independent water project in Qurayyat, Oman from the government-owned Oman Power and Water Procurement Co SAOC (OPWP). The project is worth an estimated US$250 million. Qurayyat IWP will be a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant with a designed capacity of 200 000 cubic metres per day. The project is scheduled to start commercial operation by May 2017 under a 20-year water purchase agreement with OPWP. Hyflux’s role includes turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) as well as operations and maintenance of the plant. The EPC contract is worth US$210 million.
The treatment plant, which will be delivered within 90 days, will integrate a number of technologies to remove dissolved metals, ammonia and other contaminants. The modular design, which will include BluMetric’s first industrial use of LG’s advanced membrane products, will allow the plant to be transported to and re-commissioned at other sites in the future.
