[email protected] (G. Gacar). Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent adult stem cells present in all tissues. They have a capacity of self-renewal and multipotency. These cells have the ability to differentiate into many tissues pathways such as osteogenic, chondrogenic and adipogenic. Resveratrol (RSVL) has a wide range of pharmacological properties including positive effects on cell proliferation, osteoblastic maturation, and cancer. Resveratrol is a type of polyphenol called a phytoalexin, a class of compounds produced as part of a plant’s defense system against disease. For this purpose, human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stems (BM-MSCs) (1 × 105 ) were inoculated in 6-well plates. After 2 h later, resveratrol was used at various concentrations (0, 1, 10, 20, and 40) for 1, 4, 7 and 14 days. After each time period, we determined the proliferation capacity and viability using WST and 72 h later apoptosis level using Annexin V-PI staining by using flow cytometer (each experiment was repeated 3 times). We observed that the concentrations of 10 and 20 M RSVL stimulated the MSCs proliferation, while high doses (40 M) were stopped compared the control group in WST-1 assay. The expression of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was detected on 21st day and the calcified nodules were observed by Alizarin Red S staining. The expression of gene BMP2 and BMP4 were observed a significant increase by using RT-PCR analysis. These data suggest that stem cells are enriched by culturing the heterogeneous cell populations with resveratrol. In conclusion, we are in the belief that resveratrol providing a major direct support to stem cell therapy, as an alternative option in the treatment of many diseases such as osteoporosis, considering to be a big step to be taken noted promising results. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jbiotec.2015.06.096

The aim of this study was consisting in a retrospective statistical analysis of the rabies positive animals reported from 2010 to 2014 in Moldova region, Romania. During this period, the data were collected from the local veterinary authorities from 7 counties and a number of 2112 brain samples coming from suspected animals were tested by direct immunofluorescence and mice brain inoculation. Of the 238 brain tested samples in Vrancea, 8 domestic and 31 positive wild animals were reported, while in Galat¸i, out of 64 tested samples, 10 domestic and 20 wild animals were positive. In Bac˘au, 316 samples were tested, 9 were positive in domestic and 48 in wild animals, whereas in Vaslui, 270 samples were tested and 23 domestic and 16 wild animals were positive. For Neamt¸, 12 domestic and 16 wild animals were found positive, of the 84 tested samples, while in Suceava, 44 domestic and 107 wild animals were found positive out of 604 tested samples. In Ias¸i, from a total of 536 tested samples, 38 were found positive in domestic and 71 in wild animals. In conclusion, these results should be regarded with concern since the natural outbreaks in domestic and wild animals may constitute a major risk for humans and underlines the importance of the vaccination that in the light of these results seems to be unsuccessful. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jbiotec.2015.06.097 Accuracy of the cardio-thoracic ratio measurement technique to assess the heart size in dogs Baisan Radu Andrei ∗ , Barbazan Cristina Magdalena, Bîrsan Oana, Mocanu Diana, Vulpe Vasile Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine “Ion Ionescu de la Brad” Iasi, Romania E-mail address: baisan.andrei
[email protected] (B. R. Andrei). Multiple methods for assessing the cardiac size on the X-ray have been developed. The most frequent measurement technique used in veterinary medicine is vertebral heart scale (VHS). One recent study in German Shepherd dogs found that the ratio between the thoracic and cardiac area might be a more reliable method. The aim of the study was to assess the accuracy of the cardiothoracic area (CTA) method in small breed dogs, using VHS as a reference method. One hundred and nine thoracic X-rays have been examined. The dogs have been divided into six groups by respiratory phase and VHS. The cardio-thoracic ratio was calculated for all X-rays with a commercial software (Digimizer). Our results show a significant correlation between VHS and CTA in the expiratory (r2 = 0.413, p < 0.01) and the inspiratory phase (r2 = 0.520, p < 0.01). Also there was significant correlation between the CTA and VHS in dogs with microcardia and cardiomegaly group (p < 0.05), respectively (p < 0.01). With CTA method we found significant difference between dogs with microcardia and normal heart size in expiratory (p < 0.05) and inspiratory (p = 0.05) phase. The CTA was proved to be a valid method to measure the heart size in dogs. However, using VHS as reference, CTA is more accurate to detect microcardia than cardiomegaly. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jbiotec.2015.06.098
