580 ActiGdes Reviews, edited by A. H. W. ATBN, Jr. AND J. KOOI, Elsevier, Quarterly, Dfl. 75.00 per volume.

Amsterdam,

When I was asked to review this new publication my first reaction was that it I was also a little disturbed to find was another money:spinner for the publishers. that two of the first four reviews, and the single short communication, were contributed by the joint editors or their colleagues in Amsterdam. On careful examination of the Editorial, the first set of reviews, and particularly the list of forthcoming reviews, I think that this publication will serve a need not only for research workers in the very wide field of the actinide elements, but also for students and teachers in a variety of disciplines. The nine forthcoming reviews, for which titles are given on the back cover, will be awaited with interest, but if only about four reviews are given in each issue, the length of time before future articles are published will be‘at least nine months. This is no better than any other review, and is somewhat frustrating for budding authors of “important” reviews. I anticipate that the flood of articles to the editors, both reviews and the short contributions which are earnestly requested, will extent the period to over twelve months. I think that before long the editors and publishers will decide to publish more frequently, which, however, will undoubtedly add to the profits. The first review, written most fittingly by GLENN T. SEABORG is on the history of the synthetic actinide elements. It falls short of being an outstanding and invaluable contribution in only one respect, it does not give literature references. The second review by A. H. WAPSTRA (Amsterdam) gives tables and charts to help in the recognition of actinide nuclides by their nuclear radiations. It can be considered as an abstract from’ the Nuclear Data Sheets which are to be published shortly. The tables are certainly useful but the charts are arranged in the form A vez’szbs (N-Z) instead of the more popular Z versus N form,. and they do not seem to the reviewer to be as easy to follow as the author claims. The third review by J. C. POST (Amsterdam) is an up-to-date table of cc-emitting nuclides arranged according to a-energy, and will be immensely useful in the analytical interpretation of x-spectra. The final review by W. MUELLER(Karlsruhe) is an excellent treatment of the extraction of actinides by alkyl-substituted ammonium salts in L@ p with 153 references ranging from the first work by SMITH AND PAGE in 1948 to the most recent international conference in x966. Readers of the Journal of Chromatography will iind that the chromatographic and analytical content of this first set of reviews is small, but there will undoubtedly be many reviews of direct interest to them in the future. One final small criticism is that the last group of pages fell out rather easily from the reviewer’s copy, and it is to be hoped that such a well-known publisher will be able to guarantee better stapling facilities, when the second issue appears at the price of DR. 75.00 per volume.
