Activities of the Wildlife and Forest Recreation Section of FAO In this Section, advisory work and field studies are organized, developed, and supervised, as requested by governments, on the role of wildlife management, national parks, and recreation. This includes the supervision of United Nations Development Programme projects in this field as regards the production and recreational aspects of wildlife, in conflict with various other forms of land-use, and also involves study of the impact of various types of land-use patterns and of various social, economic, and ecological factors on wildlife management. International, regional, or national meetings are arranged upon request, dealing with wildlife, national parks, and recreation. Regular meetings of working parties arc organized in Africa, North America, and Latin America. Handbooks and regional bibliographies are compiled. Studies are undertaken upon request on legislation,
including the drafting of charters and conventions concerning wildlife and national parks. Assistance is given in drafting national legislation. The economics of the wildlife resources are studied-particularly the use of protein from wild animals, the values of animal hides and trophies, and the importance of wildlife in the tourist industry. National projects that are not suitable for help within the United Nations system are passed on to potential donors, and close contact is maintained with other organizations giving assistance in these fields.
