news year. It does feel as if the market is finally recovering, but the problem is the price war," D’Angelo said. Oberthur posted a 10% decline in firstquarter 2001 sales to 103.6 million Euros, mainly due to lower SIM card sales. D’Angelo’s remarks were made as mmO2 (the successor company to BT Cellnet, which was demerged from BT last November) produced a disappointing first set of full-year figures. Growth has stagnated in mmO2’s main UK business, where revenue rose by just £50 million to £2.76 billion over the year. Pretax loss was £873 million pounds in the 12 months ended March. The figures represent a year's business (even though it was under BT for part of the time). MmO2's results followed hard on the heels of a record pre-tax loss from Vodafone, the European market leader. Contact: Catherine Vincent at Oberthur Card Systems, Tel: +33 1 41 25 29 05, email:

ACT’s Pass technology crosses the Atlantic The New York Pass, a memory chip card devised by the UK’s Applied Card Technologies (ACT) group, is to be introduced this summer to provide fast track access to prime tourist sites in the Big Apple. The Pass allows access to a range of participating attractions; passholders will be able to avoid queues, save money and enjoy special offers at selected restaurants and theatres. Visitors can purchase the Pass over the Web or from tourist authorities and travel agents — either in the visitor’s home country or in the US. New York Passes are available in a number of formats (1,2,3 and 7 day) and various card types (Adult or Child). Sixty of the city’s top visitor attractions have already signed up to participate in the New York Pass - including the Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty, The Guggenheim Museum, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s. The New York Pass is run and promoted by Leisure Pass North America, a wholly owned company of Academy Bus who have been involved in the transport industry since the 1930s. launched in the UK using ACT’s pre-paid access technology. The Pass product is now on offer in other UK tourist destinations including Bath and York. Gary Watts, Managing Director, Applied Card Technologies, said: “We see the New York Pass as a natural extension of our product range and we are delighted to have this opportunity of working with Academy Bus.” Established in 1997, ACT is a specialist chip card systems integrator; clients include Esso, ICL, CH Jones, Leisure Pass Group, British Museum and London Borough of Camden. MasterCard to offer Welcome package to its members MasterCard International and Welcome Realtime have signed a co-marketing agreement that could give MasterCard members (banks and other financial institutions) cost-effective access to Welcome's XLSmart smart cardbased loyalty product. The XLSmart System can be deployed on both the MULTOS and Javacard platforms; the idea is to free financial institutions to focus on business issues rather than on technology. The loyalty application is designed to allow merchants to target and modify a customer's individual behaviour. For example, merchants can offer specific incentives to their best existing customers to retain them, and provide tailored incentives to improve relationships with newer customers. The system also aims to add convenience for consumers by eliminating paper bonus cards and coupons and making it possible for them to receive downloadable online incentives or tickets. The agreement allows MasterCard's members to negotiate special prices for use of the XLSmart product. Members who issue cards with Welcome's XLSmart to run on an ‘open system’ basis will be charged for the actual usage of the Welcome application on their cards – and are promised no large up-front costs.
in brief ORGA has launched the High Performance Personalisation System (HPPS) a new personalisation system for smart bank cards. The HPPS package is to be offered with ORGA’s Personalisation Management Platform (PMP). The HPPS system can process several orders simultaneously, through card processing stations arranged in parallel and in series. The PMP package controls and monitors the entire personalisation process and provides security for data handling. In addition to the banking sector, the HPPS package can be configured for the ID, telecommunications and healthcare sectors. Hitachi’s AE45C smart card IC has been granted a security certificate under the Common Criteria for IT Security Evaluation (CC). The CC is an international standard (ISO 15408), and its certification results are recognized in many countries around the world. The evaluation was performed by a German evaluator, T-Systems, and the certification body was the German Bundesamt fur Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI). The AE45C is a leading member of Hitachi's AE-4 family of smart card microcontrollers; it includes 32KB EEPROM, and carries DES and modular multi-application co-processors. Infineon Technologies has also received a Common Criteria certificate from the BSI for a chip card controller with 32 Kbytes EEPROM and a 2048-bit RSA crypto library. Trintech has launched PayWare SmartPIN, a package for merchants that manages migration from magnetic stripe to chip-based credit and debit cards. The package includes Trintech's PINPad hardware, an EMV application and an application programming interface (API) that enables chip acceptance with PIN authentication to be integrated with any EPoS system. (The banking industry has mandated that, by 1 January 2005, any retailer who does not accept chip cards authenticated by PIN will be liable for all card fraud.) Trintech has also announced the launch of PayWare Merchant Retail Edition, a card processing solution for retailers and merchants who require integrated online card payment processing instead of using standalone card processing terminals. Japan's largest train company, JR East, has completed the introduction of its Suica commuter smart card in Tokyo. Since the initial roll out last November 3.6 million out of the 4.5 million Japanese who use commuter passes have switched to the new smart card.
