Addivant receives FDA approval for use of Weston 705 antioxidant in infant food packaging

C

onnecticut-based Addivant™, a supplier of liquid phosphite antioxidants for plastics, reports that its nonylphenol-free stabilizer Weston® 705 has received formal approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in plastic packaging for infant formula and human milk. The company has also raised its prices for a range of polymer antioxidants, including Weston 705. The additional FDA approval [see also ADPO, August 2014 & August 2015] covers the use of Weston 705 at levels of up to 2000 ppm in multiple types of polymers for repeatuse articles intended for infant formula and breast milk, as well as in polymers intended for use with powdered infant formula, Addivant says. The FDA has tightened its scrutiny on infant formulation even further, using the most-stringent screening procedures for this application, explains John Steitz, Addivant’s CEO. Weston 705 has been developed ‘to surpass global regulatory standards’, providing a complete profile of its non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), which allows food packaging companies ‘to stay ahead of the industry curve’, he says. ‘This approval from the FDA for use in infant formula and human milk plastic applications confirms the unique benefits of this new generation of antioxidants in the most sensitive applications’, Steitz adds. According to the former Chemtura company, Weston 705 is already approved for use in food contact packaging in more than 180 countries and, moreover, is the only nonylphenol-free liquid phosphite antioxidant alternative

with food contact approvals in the USA, Canada, Europe and China. This enables resin producers and packaging manufacturers to employ ‘a single, global solution’ for consumer packaged goods customers looking ‘to stay ahead of the regulatory curve’, the company says. First introduced in 2007 [ibid., December 2007], Weston 705 is the result of more than seven years of research and investment, making it ‘the most thoroughly tested new plastic antioxidant on the market today’, Addivant claims. In related news, the company has recently implemented price increases affecting selected plastic antioxidants and inhibitors. Effective from 8 March 2017, or as existing contracts allow, Addivant has raised prices by 5–15% for Anox 1315, 20 and PP18; Lowinox CPL; Ultranox 626 and 627; Weston TNPP, 398T, 399 and 705; Alkanox 240; and Naugard liquid phosphite ester antioxidants. And from 14 March 2017, or as contract terms permit, prices for Naugard I-5, 445 and Q; Octamine; and Anox 405 were raised by 5–10%. Addivant cites sharp increases in feedstock prices and energy costs as the reasons for these increases. Acquired by SK Capital from Chemtura in 2013 [ibid., July 2013], Addivant is a polymer additives specialist. Its portfolio includes antioxidants, light stabilizers, rubber additives, polymer modifiers, metal deactivators, polymerization inhibitors and intermediates. The company has 11 plants on five continents, with its global headquarters located in Connecticut, USA, and regional headquarters in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia; Basel, Switzerland; and Shanghai, China. European plastics converters alliance warns of TiO2 shortage impact

T

he Polymers for Europe Alliance, an offshoot of the European Plastics Converters association (EuPC), has voiced concerns about the impact of the current reduced supply of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in Europe on the region’s plastics manufacturers. TiO2 is used in white masterbatches and as a UV stabilizer in rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products for outdoor use.
