ADDRESS AT OPENING CEREMONY

P

ROF Haberal, Dep. Prime Minister Bahceli, Minister Durmus, Prof Erek, members and guests of the Turkish Transplantation Society. On behalf of The Transplantation Society, I would like to express our distinct pleasure in supporting this very important meeting on the advances in tissue and organ transplantation, this the Fifth Scientific Congress of the Turkish Transplantation Society. Considering the spectacular advances in transplantation that have occurred here in Turkey over the past quarter of a century, in both clinical and investigative arenas, it is only fitting and appropriate for the Turkish Transplantation Society to organize such a high caliber Congress covering a broad spectrum of topics in the field of transplantation. Examples of the remarkable progress, since the first successful kidney transplant performed in Turkey in 1975 by Professor Haberal, are the current existence of 19 transplant centers in Turkey, supported by 279 dialysis centers. Since 1975, approximately 4000 kidney transplants have been performed and liver, heart and bone marrow transplants are being performed in increasing numbers. Scientifically, Turkey is now amongst the top five countries in the number of abstracts submitted to the ERA/EDTA Congresses, and Turkey also now ranks amongst the top one-third of European countries for published articles in the ERA/EDTA Journal.

Consistent with their pioneering success, Professor Haberal and his associates have truly prepared a superb program, with a distinguished list of speakers and a wide range of scientific papers for presentation. The scientific program is not only outstanding and comprehensive but, most importantly, it nicely complements the accomplishments and achievements of the Turkish transplant surgeons, physicians and scientists since the first kidney transplant in Turkey in 1975. Last, I would like to heartily and sincerely congratulate, and pay tribute to Professor Haberal and the Turkish Transplantation Society for not only providing superb organization and facilities for this important meeting, but also extending to all of us their most gracious hospitality. In closing, and on behalf of The Transplantation Society, I would also like to extend to all attendees our very best and sincerest wishes for a very productive and pleasant week, one that should prove to be a memorable event.
