Book reviews Adhesives Handbook

(2nd Edition)

J. Shields

Newnes-Butterworth (1976) £12.50 The first edition of the handbook appeared in 1970 and was well received being attractive to both the adhesives technologist and layman alike. For the former it is extremely useful as a reference guide to available adhesives, their physical and mechanical properties, adherend surface preparation and standard test methods; for the latter it provides a means of assessing and selecting adhesives for specific bonding applications as well as a comprehensive account of commercially available materials and a list of manufacturers of adhesives and associated processing equipment. Happily, in the second edition the author has resisted the temptation to embark on any major changes and in con-

tent and format the revised version follows very closely its predecessor. The main differences are that Chapter 2 has been expanded to include a section on the determination of optimum joint dimensions with worked examples, and that Chapters 5 and 10, comprising an adhesives products directory and lists of adhesives and trade sources respectively, have been updated. At today's prices the handbook at £12.50 represents very good value for money. J.L. Cotter Materials Department, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Famborough, Hants, England

L.E. Nielsen

Marcel Dekker lnc, New York (1974) $57.50 L.E. Nielsen has been widely known as the author of 'Mechanical Properties of Polymers' which, when published in 1962, represented one of the first attempts at a thorough treatment of the subject. But, since then, knowledge of the subject has increased considerably and much more has been published on it, all of which provided good reason for the preparation of a successor to the original book. The new book is not, however, likely to occupy the position held by its author's earlier work. In part this is due to the sheer number of books dealing with the properties of polymeric materials which are now available. But, in part, this is also due to it not containing much more than has already appeared elsewhere. It is, no doubt, suitable for 'a one semester course on mechanical properties of polymers' and, according to its author, it 'has already been tested in courses at Washington University'. However, it is difficult to recommend anyone rushing to buy it, particularly when the present exchange value of the pound makes its price in the United Kingdom more than £30. At that price one might have expected, apart from anything else, a well produced book.

COMPOSITES . OCTOBER 1976

But, in fact, its appearance is unattractive, due to its typewriter-set text and the inconsistent presentation of graphs. One major improvement of the new book on the earlier one is that it recognises the existence of fibre- (and other) reinforced plastics composites. In fact, the author claims that 'no comparable book exists which covers the entire field of the mechanical behaviour of composite materials'. Whatever grounds there are for such a sweeping claim, the treatment of composites is confined to two chapters, in the second volume, one being devoted to 'particulatefilled polymers' and the other to 'fibre-filled composites'. It cannot, therefore, be very deep. Each of the eight chapters ends with a useful list of references. However, the dates of these do not, in general, go beyond 1970, and a good deal more has been published since then, particularly on composites. R.M.
