ADMINISTRATIVE PROBLEMS OF THE HEALTH SERVICE T h e Institute of Public Administration is organising a threeday conference under the above title, to be held at Church House, Dean's Yard, Westminster, from March 14th to 16~h next, with Mr. Henry Lesser, C.B.E., Chairman, London Executive Council, and a member of the N.W. Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board and of the L.C.C. Health Committee, presiding. The purpose of the conference is to provide an opportunity for the discussion of the main administrative problems that have arisen in caring for the health of the individual since the passing of the National Health Service Act, I946 ; to promote a greater understanding between those concerned in the various medical and social services ; and to review their relationships. The sessions of the conference and opening speakers will be as follows : -

A reception for conference delegates will be held in B.M.A. House on Thursday evening, March 15th, by courtesy of the Association. The conference has the approval of the Ministry of Health, and the Institute has consulted representatives of interested associations, including the B.M.A. and the Society of M.O.H., in drawing up the programme. The Ministry of Health have sanctioned the attendance of representatives of the various hospital authorities, executive councils and local health authorities. The conference fee is £3 3s. S O C I E T Y O F MED]~CAL O F F I C E R S O F H E A L T H Befresher Course for School Medical Officers, Manchester ; April 14th and 15th The School Health Service Group of the Society has arranged a week-end refresher course to take place in Manchester on Saturday and Sunday, April t4th and 15th next, intended particulafly for medical officers who deal with the ascertainment of children under the Handicapped Pupils Regulations, and will be devoted to lectures and demonstrations on recent developments in connection with the care of the deaf child. The appropriate departments of the University. of Manchester have agreed to co-operate generously in the work of the course. The programme of lectures and demonstrations is as follows :
Saturday, April 14th Prof. and Mrs. Ewing and their staff. Tests of hearing and the ascertainment of deafness. The assessment of intelligence and educational attainment in the deaf child. Afternoon. Recent developments in the special educational treatment of the deaf and partially deaf. Parental guidance and home training for the deaf child.

Sunday, April 15th Prof. Lambert, Department of Otola~'ngology, University of Manct~ester. Prof. and Mrs. Ewing. Morning. T h e causes of deafness in children and modern methods of treatment. Recent films illustrating the modern approach to the problem of deafness in children.
Afternoon. Demonstrations of modern apparatus used in tile examination and training of the deaf child. T h e tuition fee for the course if £ t ls., payable in advance. The numlzer of places available is limited and application should be made early to the Executive Secretary, Society of Medical Officers of Health, Tavistock House South, Tavistock Square, London, W.C.1, and in any case not later than Marcia 14th. If the number of applications exceeds the maximum number of available places, the Refresher Course Committee will distribute the places as equitably as possible between the authorities and individuals who have submitted applications. Provisional applications should be accompanied by a registration fee of 10s. 6d. (cheques drawn to the Society" of Medical Officers of Health), which will be credited to the course fee. In the event of an application not being accepted, the registration fee will be returned. Residential accommodation for medical officers taking the course will be available at St. Anselm Hall, Victoria Park, Manchester. The inclusive charge for residence from 4 p.m. on Friday, April 13th, till the afternoon of Sunday, April 15th, will be £1 18s. per person. After consultation with the Minister of Education, it has been ascertained that he will not desire to offer any objection to the payment by local education authorities of any reasonable expenditure consequential on the attendance of the school medical officers at these lectures and demonstrations. The above notice has been sent to all Directors of Education and Chief Education Officers in England and Wales and to Chief School Medical Officers. Members of the Group who wish to attend should apply to their S.M.O. but can send individual provisional applications to the Executive Secretary, enclosing registration fee (10s. 6d.). Post-graduate Week-end for M. & C.W. Medical Officers, Sheffield, May 4th to 6th T h e provincial week-end organised by the M. & C.W. Group will be held in Sheffield from Friday evening, May 4th, 1951, when the Lord Mayor will give a reception, until Sunday, May 6th. Further details will appear in March PUBLIC HEALTH.
Refresher Course for Medical O[ficers of Health, Cardiff, July 2nd to 6th V~rith the co-operation of the VC'elshNational School of Medicine (University of Wales) a refresher course for Medical Officers of Health on " Some Current Problems and Research Methods," under the direction of Prof.F.Grundy, Mansell Talbot Professor of Preventive Medicine, is to take place at the Department of Preventive Medicine, The Parade, Cardiff, from Monday evening, July 2nd to Friday afternoon, July 6th next. Accommodation will be available for medical officers attending the course at the Aberdare Hall, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Parts of the course will be especially designed for ~Iedical Officers of Health interested in research projects in infant morbidity. Full programme witl be published in the next issue. There will be an inclusive fee of 8 guineas covering the course and board at Aberdare Hall. The Chief Medical Officer, Ministry of Health, has seen the provisional programme and said that he considers that it will be an interesting and useful course for the medical officers who attend it. Provisional applications may be sent at once to the Executive Secretary.
Tuberculosis and Diseases of the Chest Conference, Oxford, July 16th to 21st A Conference on Tuberculosis and Diseases of the Chest will be held in Oxford from Monday, July 16th to Friday, 21st next. This Conference, will display thought and work on tuberculosis and diseases of the chest by men and women from Great Britain. The following professional organisations are the sponsors: Faculty of Radiologists, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Tuberculosis Society of Scotland, Society of Medical Officers of Health, British Paediatrie and British Tuberculosis Associations. The sponsors hope that many doctors from Europe and all parts of the world will wish to attend this important Conference. Members will be housed in Balliol, St. John's and Trinity Colleges, and the Conference sessions wilt be held in the Taylor Institution. There will be room in Balliol College for a limited number of women doctors but none for married couples. Members of The Conference will assemble on Monday evening, July 16th. The next three days, July 17th, 18th and 19th, will be devoted to lectures and discussions. On the Friday, July 20th, the Conference will disperse to various thoracic centres throughout the country. T h e inclusive charge for complete board and accommodation (with gratuities) in College from dinner on July 16th to breakfast on July 20th, incIusive, together with Conference Fee and Grand Dinner, will be £7 7s.
