Advances in Cardiology : The Myocardium. Edited by Ralph Reader. Base1 : Karger.

1974. Pp. viii + 364. Erg.60. The book consists of the proceedings of a meeting held in Canberra in May 1973 which dealt with function and disease of the myocardium. It therefore consists of a number of scientific papers by a group of invited speakers, all experts in their own areas. This inevitably leads to variations in style and presentation. The book, however, is not intended to be a textbook. The introductory section deals with fundamental subjects such as the structure of myocardial muscle cells and sinus node tissue, the regulation of contraction and myocardial energetics. It also has a section on muscle hypertrophy. There are chapters dealing with cardiac glycosides and other drug effects which alter cardiac energetics. From the clinical point of view the most interesting section is on the study of myocardial performance in man using both invasive and non-invasive techniques. The human studies also include studies on the conducting system and the effects of various drugs. Finally there is a little space devoted to the evaluation of aortocoronary bypass surgery. This entirely clinical subject is rather out of keeping with the high level basic science with which most of the rest of the book is concerned. In general the book provides an excellent summary of up to date thinking on the subjects covered and the lists of references are long and useful. It would be of considerable value to anybody with a special interest in the fields covered. RAPHAEL BALCON

Surgery of the Lung: WILLIAMS. London:

The Coventry Conference. Edited by R. E. SMITH and W. G.

Butterworths.

1974. Pp. xiv + 276. L6.50.

For those of us who attended the Coventry Conference on Surgery of the Oesophagus in 1972, it was with the certain knowledge that a Conference on Surgery of the Lung in 1974 would be equally successful. Mr Roger Abbey Smith and his colleagues collected together surgeons of international repute who gave papers on various problems associated with lung surgery, and this book records these papers, with a verbatim report on the most interesting discussions which followed each session.
