ation and laser surgery, with a total of 24 contributing authors. With this breadth of coverage, it is obvious that no topic can be treated in any depth. Nevertheless the articles, albeit brief (and in one case written as long ago as August 1983), are in general well written and useful and Wiley have made an excellent job of the production. The volume will make interesting supplementary reading for a wide range of spectroscopists.
ADVANCES IN LASER SPECTROSCOPY, Vol. 3, edited by B. A. GARETZ and J. R. LOMBARDI. John Wiley & Sons, Chichester, 1986, ix + 212 pp. k33.50. The volume under review is part of a series which has recently grown out of the symposium on laser spectroscopy which is now held annually at the Polytechnic Institute of New York. The contributions are in general based upon these conference proceedings, and they relate primarily to progress in atomic and molecular spectroscopy developing from advances in laser technology. This volume covers the following topics: electronic excitations, studies of solutions, solids, surfaces, metal complexes and counterions, combustion dynamics, intermolecular relaxation, photochemistry, photodissoci-
