Annduncements 16th BIENNIAL SYMPOSIUM-ADVANCES IN NEW MATERIALS Sponsored by The American Chemical Society, Division of Polymer Chemistry, Inc., 17-21 November 1990, Pier Sixty-Six Hotel and Marina, Fort Lauderdale, FL, U.S.A. This symposium will focus on new, innovative chemistries in emerging polymer science fields. Invited papers and poster contributions will include topics on high performance polymers, optical properties of polymers, polymers for electronic applications, electronically conductive polymers and new polymeric materials. Contact: J. Salamone, Department of Chemistry, University of Lowell, 1 University Avenue, Lowell, MA 01854, U.S.A. Tel: (407) 451-9260.

ADVANCES IN SILICON-BASED POLYMER SCIENCE Sponsored by The American Chemical Society, Division of Polymer Chemistry, Inc., 16-20 December 1990, Sheraton Makaha, Oahu, Hawaii. The goal of this workshop is to provide a highly interdisciplinary and unified understanding of the special role that silicon often plays in polymers. The workshop will draw together current research in the areas of synthesis, properties, theory, chemistry and applications of polymers with silicon-oxygen backbones, silicon-silicon backbones, preceramic polymers and polymers with other types of silicon functionality in which the silicon plays a central role in determining the properties. Plenary critical overviews, shorter presentations and poster sessions are planned. Contact: J. Ziegler, Silchemy, Inc., 2208 Lest Dr. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112, U.S.A. Tel.: (505) 294-0098.

SURFACE ENGINEERING: CURRENT TRENDS AND FUTURE PROSPECTS This Surface Engineering Conference will be held on 25-27 June 1990, at the University of Toronto, Sandford Fleming Building, 10 King’s College Road, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The objective of the Symposium is to address all aspects of Surface Engineering and in particular: -

Surface Characterization: chemical, mechanical and physical.

-

Surface Integrity: fatigue, stress-corrosion cracking, corrosion, erosion, fretting, and interactions.

-

Surface Treatments and Technology: machining, forming, impact surface treatment, coating, bonding, laser shock waves, chemical treatments, electroplating, heat treatment.

-

Emerging Technologies: computer-aided surface engineering, anti-corrosive coatings, ceramics, laser treatment, peen-forming, ion implantation, developments in health and safety hazards, surface effects in Biomedical Engineering, Biosystem Contacts.
