Degrémont wins Czech wastewater treatment plant contract
P
rague’s municipal council has awarded Degrémont, in consortium with SMP, Hochtief and WTE, a contract to design, build and operate for one-year Prague’s main wastewater treatment plant under a E257 million contract. With a capacity of 350 000 m3 per day, the plant will serve a population of 1.1 million people and will be built on the island of Cisarsky Ostrov.
Chinese recycling system uses membrane technology
K
och Membrane Systems Inc (KMS) is to provide membranes for a large-scale wastewater recycling system for Chinese steel plate manufacturer Yingkou Medium Plate Co Ltd. The project will recycle the plant’s wastewater to meet strict government discharge regulations and to conserve the region’s fresh water supply. KMS will supply 832 TARGA 10-inch cartridges as well as the necessary engineering support for the Yingkou project, working with Capital Engineering & Research Inc Ltd (CERI). The system is designed to handle an annual average flow of 80 000 m3/d. Start-up is scheduled for early 2012. This will be CERI’s second time using KMS TARGA UF membranes for a wastewater recovery project.
AECOM/Galliford Try JV awarded US$24mn Yorkshire Water project
A
n AECOM Technology Corp and Galliford Try joint venture has won a US$24 million contract to upgrade the Woodhouse Mill Wastewater Treatment Works for Yorkshire Water in the UK.
The AECOM and Galliford Try joint venture team will provide technical and management services to refurbish pumping station facilities, the existing inlet screw pumping station, new inlet works and other facilities as well as design several new components for the Yorkshire system. The contract is part of Yorkshire Water’s Fifth Asset Management Plan capital-delivery framework. The program is designed to ensure that the treated water discharged back into the environment meets the standards of the revised European Freshwater Fish Directive, which will come into effect in 2015.
UK recognises need for water reform to tackle future drought threat
T
he UK government’s Water White Paper launches a new approach to national water management. The report, Water for Life, offers longterm plans to ensure that the UK’s future water sector is resilient, and that water companies are more efficient. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman has warned that the UK faces a future of water shortages and lasting environmental damage, with some rivers running dry, unless attitudes to water use change. Launching a new approach to water management, Spelman said that severe weather events, population growth, and the need to grow more food will all put more pressure on the UK’s water resources. The UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has just published long-term plans to ensure that the future water sector is resilient, water companies are more efficient and customer-focused, and water is valued as a precious resource. The Water White Paper is a preliminary to the government publishing a draft Water Bill for pre-legislative scrutiny in early 2012, before it can be debated in Parliament. The report outlines plans to reform the water industry and deregulate water markets to drive economic growth, as well as removing barriers that have discouraged new entrants in the water market. Water companies will be asked to consider where water trading and interconnecting pipelines could help ensure secure water supplies at a price customers can afford.
