AFC in strategic tech partnership with De Nora

U

K-based AFC Energy has signed a Joint Development Agreement with Italian company Industrie De Nora SpA, to target technological enhancements to AFC’s alkaline fuel cell system, and further accelerate commercialisation of its technology platform. The partners also aim to widen the collaboration in the long term to develop new product offerings that combine AFC’s industrial alkaline fuel cell system with De Nora’s systems, and provide a vehicle to open up new markets for mutual benefit. De Nora is a multinational leader in sustainable technologies that offer energysaving solutions for electrochemical processes. It manufactures electrodes for alkaline water electrolysis, chlor-alkali and galvanic processes, and is a global player in water and wastewater treatment, disinfection and filtration for marine, power, industrial, and municipal markets. De Nora decided to partner with AFC Energy after extensive technical discussions over recent months. The JDA builds on the successful

strategic partnership between AFC Energy and German process engineering consultancy plantIng GmbH [FCB, March 2016, p6], and is consistent with AFC’s 2016 strategic intention of leveraging the successful experience of other companies in its roadmap to success [see the AFC feature in FCB, December 2015]. AFC Energy’s Power-Up project is demonstrating the world’s largest operational alkaline fuel cell system, at the Air Products industrial gas plant in Stade, Germany [FCB, February 2016, p4]. The company has also just completed design and basic engineering of its new 10 kW system [see page 8]. In early 2015 De Nora announced a technology partnership agreement with French company McPhy Energy, whereby De Nora is supplying activated electrodes for McPhy’s new-generation alkaline water electrolysers [FCB, March 2015, p8].

True Zero serves 1 million zero-emission miles

C

alifornia-based True Zero, which operates the world’s largest network of retail hydrogen refueling stations, recently passed a major milestone. Since True Zero opened its first hydrogen station in California nine months ago, its network has performed more than 6300 vehicle fills totaling more than 15 900 kg of hydrogen, which equates to more than 1 million zero-emission miles driven by fuel cell electric vehicles. Toyota has recently accelerated sales of its Mirai in California [FCB, January 2016, p11], and Honda will begin selling its Honda Clarity there in the autumn, after retail sales began in Japan earlier this year [April 2016, p2]. Between November 2015 and May 2016, True Zero – established by FirstElement Fuel – completed 15 hydrogen stations throughout California, 14 of which are open for retail fueling [and see page 4]. Hydrogen Network runs from Lake Tahoe, through the San Francisco Bay Area and down into Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and Orange Counties, including a station off Interstate 5 at Harris Ranch, which helps connect northern and southern California [FCB, May 2016, p11]. The network will soon expand into San Diego, where True Zero recently broke ground on a station. Linde also operates a retail hydrogen station in Sacramento [FCB, September 2015, p6], which helps connect the state’s major metropolitan regions. This first phase of the True Zero Hydrogen Network was developed as a result of grant funding from the California Energy Commission [FCB, May 2014, p7 and June 2014, p6], with additional funding from Toyota, Honda, and the South Coast and Bay Area Air Quality Management Districts.
