N Horizon Wind Energy LLC has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement with Snohomish County Public Utility District to sell wind energy from the Wheat Field wind farm. The wind farm will have an installed capacity of 96.6 MW and will consist of 46 Suzlon S88 2.1 MW turbines. Energy production is set to start in spring 2009. N Austin Energy has received approval to enter into a 20-year US$2.3 billion contract to purchase all the power produced from a proposed 100 MW wood-waste-fuelled biomass power plant in Sacul, Texas. It will burn wood waste from logging and mill activity, as well as urban wood waste from clearing, tree trimming and pallets. The plant is projected to go online by spring 2012. N GE and Google are joining forces to help develop power generation, transmission and distribution – the so-called smart grid – and its interface with next generation electric transportation. GE and Google say they will lobby for federal policies that are “critical” to building a 21st century US electricity system.

making use of GE Energy’s gas engine to produce combined heat and power (CHP) from chicken manure biogas. The Beijing Deqingyuan Chicken Farm Waste Utilisation plant will provide 14,600 MWh of electricity annually, and is the first of its type in China. The farm’s cogeneration system features an anaerobic digester system to treat the waste material, producing enough biogas to fuel two gas engines. N Solar wafer manufacturer LDK Solar Co Ltd has awarded a US$220 million contract to Applied Materials Inc to provide precision wafering systems to support its next phase of production expansion. Shipping to LDK Solar’s facility in Xinyu, China, is scheduled to start early 2009, and will support LDK Solar’s previously announced plans to expand to 3.2 GW annual wafer capacity in 2010. N Mitsubishi Electric Corp plans to quadruple its annual photovoltaic (PV) cell production to 600 MW by 2012, investing ¥50 billion. Mitsubishi says it plans to construct a new building for PV cell production, the PV Cell 8

N Trina Solar’s Changzhou subsidiary has signed a long-term supply agreement with GCL Silicon Technology Holdings. N Vestas has inaugurated its new technology centre in Chennai, India. The centre encompasses a 60,000 ft2 area, and is located at TECCI Park, Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Chennai. it will house Vestas Technology R&D’s future activities in India. N AREVA and Shanghai Electric (SEC) have signed a partnership agreement, complementing the existing joint-venture (JV) between the two companies. They will build two new transformer manufacturing sites in Wuhan (Hubei Province, Eastern China) and Lingang (Shanghai area) that will begin production in 2009. AREVA will also build a new R&D centre in Shanghai that will open at the end of 2009, focusing on ultra high-voltage.

project in Monterrey, Mexico, has been described as “a model renewable energy project” for Latin America by Mexican President Felipe Calderón. The 12 MW Monterrey landfill gas plant is said to be one of the most powerful of its kind in Latin America. The plant is operated by Bioelectrica de Monterrey, S.A. de C.V., a subsidiary company of SEISA and Gentor. N The Australian Government has launched the report Australia’s Low Pollution Future: The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation looking at the costs and opportunities of acting decisively to meet the challenge of climate change. It provides evidence that quick action will sustain growth, create new jobs and protect the economy into the future.
