The American Intra-Ocular Implant Society (AIOIS) was founded in 1974 ,to promote education, research and the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of cataract surgery and implantation of intraocular lenses. These goals are as relevant today as they were in 1974, and AIOIS has established itself as the major source of scientific information with regard to implants. This has been done through the sponsorship of an annual Symposium, research fellowships, and the establishment of a highly regarded scientific Journal. With the advent of federal intervention in intraocular lens implantation in 1978, AIOIS assumed the additional role of representative and guardian of the interests of all implant surgeons and ophthalmologists interested in lens implantation. Since the safety and efficacy of intraocular lenses is of paramount importance to ophthalmologists, it goes without saying that we are also representing the best interests of our patients. A tremendous amount of time and effort has been expended by officers and members of this Society before the federal regulatory agencies. The primary goal has been to provide accurate scientific information so that sound, informed judgements can be made. Much inaccurate and nonscientific information has been presented by self-appointed consumer advocates; We have today successfully refuted much of their misinformation, but it is an ongoing, time-consuming process. One measure of our success has been the suspension of most of the preoperative and postoperative data submissions previously required with the adjunct intraocular lens study. It behooves all ophthalmologists interested in intraocular lens implantation to support these efforts, which are nothing short of monumental. If you are not already a member of the American Intra-Ocular Implant Society, I strongly urge you to join us. Manus C. Kraff, M.D. Secretary

ALTERNATIVES IN CORRECTION OF APHAKIA The availability of intraocular lenses (IOLs), extended-wear or daily wear contact lenses, spectacles, and refractive keratoplasty will hopefully motivate cataract surgeons to "tailor-make" aphakic correction according to a patient's particular needs. l24
