Nomura Microsciences, inc. (NMS) and lonics, Incorporated (NYSE, ION) announced effective today that NMS will begin selling the electrodeionization (EDI) products of lonics to its customers in the semiconductor industry in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The EDI products are the subject of a licensing and marketing agreement recently signed between Nomura and lonics. EDI products are used to purify water to the extremely high levels required by the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries as well as for power generation applications. Use of the EDI process virtually eliminates the requirement to employ the more traditional ion-exchange process in certain water purification applications. The ion-exchange process requires the use of hazardous acid and base chemicals in the regeneration of ion-exchange resins. By essentially eliminating the use of hazardous chemicals, the replacement of ion-exchange with EDI in existing or new purification

Airmaster An Airmaster Engineering dust extraction system has been incorporated in a new process line introduced at Electra Furnace Products, manufacturers of magnesium oxide powders. It is expected to achieve emission levels well below Environmental Protection Act requirements. Part of a f3.7 million expansion project, the additional line has been introduced to meet increased worldwide demand for magnesium oxide, used by manufacturers of electric heating elements for domestic and industrial appliances.

Comprising of a fusion station together with associated crushing, grinding, screening and calcination equipment, the new line has expanded the Hull, UK plant’s production capacity by around 300%. It makes the company, a division of Universal Ceramic Materials plc, the world’s largest manufacturer of electrical grade magnesium oxide. The production process involves melting granular magnesite at 2400°C in an electric fusion station which produces red-hot ingots weighing around 13 tonnes. After cooling down, the ingots

facilities permits a safer, more environmentallyfriendly, lower cost method of producing ultrapure water. lonics developed the EDI technology used in large-scale ultrapure water applications and has installed more than 50 such systems worldwide. lonics owns several patents for the EDI process. Nomura has indicated that it has already received numerous inquiries for EDI and that negotiations are underway for several EDI systems. lonics is a separations technology company involved worldwide in the manufacture and sale of membranes and related equipment for the purification, concentration, treatment and analysis of water and wastewater, in the supply of purified water, food and chemical products, and in the sale of bottled water and home water purifiers. ionics Inc., PO Box 9131, Watertown, Massachusetts 02272 9131, USA. pass through a series of crushing and grinding operations where they are turned into powder. So as to create a dustfree atmosphere Airmaster has installed seven MJX MasterJet stand-alone reverse jet filters with their own fan units and individual capacities ranging from 4000 to 17 000 Nm3/hr. Designed for arduous applications involving high concentrations of dust, they are connected to extraction points in all of the dust making areas in the production line’s materials handling system, plus the packing department where

the powder is semi-automatically filled into sacks. As environmental matters are a prime concern of Electra Furnace Products, the extracted dust is reprocessed and returned to the fusion process ensuring there is no raw material wastage. The MJX’s emission levels will be closely monitored once the new process line is fully operational, with early indications that they will be well within EPA requirements.
