It has been brought to the attention of the Editor in Chief that there has been a significant degree of plagiarism in the above article from the paper entitled Combitube: A study for proper use. Urtubia R, Aguila C M, Cumsille M A. Anesthesia and Analgesia 2000;90:958 /62. An acknowledgement of the situation and an apology from one of the authors of the article that appeared in Resuscitation has been recieved. Their apology has been generously accepted by Dr Urtubia on behalf of his colleagues, and by the Editor of Anesthesia and Analgesia . The article by Paventi and his colleagues is formally withdrawn from publication in Resuscitation and the Editor in Chief of Resuscitation offers his apology to Dr Urtubia and the Editor and Publishers of Anesthesia and Analgesia for this unfortunate incident. Peter Baskett Editor-in-Chief Resuscitation. Retraction Statement The authors of the paper published in Resuscitation 2001;51:129-133, regret very much that they must retract their paper. After your e-mail we became aware of what a coauthor of the paper had done. In fact, the first author asked Dr. Colio to translate the paper into English. Now he has confessed that, to save him a lot of time in writing the paper, he copied many portions of the work of Urtubia et al. Combitube: A study for proper use, published in Anesth & Analg 2000;90:958 /62, including some results, the complete statistical data and conclusions. Dr. Paventi and the co-authors were unaware of this situation and remained unaware of the plagiarism until now. We have removed Dr. Colio from the study group and cancelled his name from other work in
progress and requested him to send an explanation to the Editor-In-Chief of Resuscitation. After many discussions inside the study group, all the authors have decided to withdraw the paper and to suspend sending papers to Resuscitation and Anesthesia & Analgesia for a two years period. This is to safeguard the reputation of our investigators. We very much regret this situation but consider that the best thing is to retract the paper. In summary: 1) Plagiarism: the text by Urtubia et al. was copied beyond an acceptable level. This was done without the co-authors knowledge. 2) Results and statistical analysis and conclusions: some results, including airway pressures, time of patients discharge, the statistical data and formulae about the pharyngeal balloon inflation volume (PBIV) and the patients height (PH), and conclusions were copied from the text by Urtubia et al. In this situation of plagiarism an ‘‘errata corrige’’ is unacceptable and could not resolve anything. All the authors are very regretful and apologize for the situation. Dr. Paventi, as first author, is deeply sad and mortified at this situation and gives Prof. Baskett, as Editor-In-Chief Resuscitation , and Prof. Miller, as Editor-In-Chief Anesthesia & Analgesia , and Dr. Urtubia, Dr. Aguila and Prof. Cumsille, as authors of the copied article, his personal apologies for this regrettable situation.
