MINING & MINERALS AKER KVAERNER TIES UP STUDY Aker Kvaerner has completed a pre-feasibility study of the Projeto 118 Oxide Project in the Carajàs Mineral Province in the State of Pará, Brazil. The project is owned by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), which is the largest diversified mining company in the Americas. Aker Kvaerner is currently acting as owner’s engineer for development of the Sossego Copper Sulphide project, owned by a subsidiary of CVRD. The scope of the study included crushing, leaching, agglomeration, and solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) facilities for processing 6–7 million tonnes per year of ore; and infrastructure necessary to support the projected operations. CVRD intends to develop between four and six copper deposits in Brazil in the next few years.
SHIP BUILDING AMTW SECURES ORDER FOR 6 CONTAINER VESSELS Aker MTW Werft (AMTW) in Wismar has been awarded contracts valued at around US$205 million to build six MTW 2500 container vessels for Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), the Teheran based shipowner. Werft (KWW) in RostockWarnemünde. The four vessels that will be built by AMTW will be delivered between the end of 2003 and mid-2004 while KWW will deliver two vessels in the second quarter of 2004. The MTW 2500 vessels are 207.4 m long and 29.8 m wide, with a dead weight of 33 900 tonnes. With a main engine output of 21 560 kW, the vessels have a service speed of 22.3 knots in design draught of 10.1 metres.
KWW TO BUILD 4 CARRIERS FOR HAMBURG SUD Kvaerner Warnow Werft (KWW) in RostockWarnemünde, Germany has secured contracts to build four Warnow CV 2500 series container vessels for delivery in 2003 and 2004. The vessels will be delivered to and operated by the major German shipowner Hamburg Süd under long-term charters. The total contract value is about US$130 million. The vessels are due for delivery in the second half of 2003 and in the first quarter of 2004. The Warnow CV 2500 vessels are 208.3 m long and 29.8 m wide, with a dead weight of 33 700 tonnes. With a main engine output of 20 930 kW, the vessels have a speed of 22 knots in design draught of 10.1 metres.
ALSTOM SECURES ORDERS WORTH 110M Alstom has signed a first contract with the French Ifremer Institute for the construction of an oceanographic ship due for delivery at the beginning of 2005. Equipped to sail in all seas, the 105 m vessel will be capable of carrying Ifremer’s large scale equipment, such as the manned submersible Nautile,
the remotely controlled submersible Victor 6000, or new launches of the French Navy’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department (SHOM). This civilian ship will be used 200 days per year by Ifremer and 150 days by the French Navy. In addition, Alstom has entered the mega-yacht market, by winning a contract for the construction of a luxury ship, more than 70 m in length. These two ships will be built in the Alstom Leroux Naval shipyard in Lorient, Brittany.
DAEWOO TO EXPORT US$160M SHIPS TO SINGAPORE Daewoo International has signed an agreement with Singaporean firm Ocean Tanker to supply four oil tanker ships estimated to be worth US$100 million. The four 50 000-ton class oil tankers, to be constructed by Shinah Shipbuilding, are to be delivered from 2004.
POWER GENERATION ICA FLUOR DANIEL TO BUILD 498 MW MEXICAN POWER PLANT Iberdrola Energia SA has awarded ICA Fluor Daniel, the industrial engineering company jointly owned by Fluor Corp and Empresas ICA Sociedad Controladora, a contract for the construction of a combined-cycle power plant in Gomez Palacios, Durango, Mexico. The US$250 million La Laguna II plant will have a capacity of 498 MW and will provide electricity to the booming northern industrial zone of Mexico, as well as stabilizing the electrical grid in
the area. Power generated will be sold to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), under its program to develop independent power producers (IPPs). The contract is a 30month, lump-sum, turnkey project that involves engineering, procurement, construction and start-up services. The project is scheduled for completion in April 2005.
FW TO SUPPLY A 460 MWe TURNKEY BOILER PLANT IN POLAND Foster Wheeler Energia Oy, and its Polish subsidiary, Foster Wheeler Energia Polska Sp zoo, have signed a contract with Poland’s Poludniowy Koncern Energetyczny (PKE) to supply a boiler island to a 460 MWe power plant at Lagisza in southern Poland. The contract is valued at approximately US$145.8 million. The new unit will be built alongside PKE’s existing 840 MWe power station at Lagisza, northeast of Katowice in Upper Silesia, and is part of an ongoing program by PKE to replace outdated capacity with modern, highefficiency, environmentally friendly technologies. Operating seven other power stations in southern and western Poland, PKE is the country’s largest electricity utility, with 5056 MW of installed generating capacity.
