OIL & GAS US$81 MN EBRD LOAN FOR KAZAKH EXPORT PIPELINE The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has lent US$81.6 million to a company jointly run by Kazakhstan’s oil pipeline operator and China’s largest oil and gas group for a project linking the landlocked country’s oilfields to its main export routes. The 10-year loan will allow MunaiTas to refinance debt incurred in constructing part of its 448-km oil pipeline connecting oilfields in the Aktobe region of central Kazakhstan to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium and the Atyrau-Samara export pipelines. Known as the KenkiyakAtyrau oil pipeline, the link cuts transport costs and opens up the export potential of oilfields in Central Kazakhstan. Further work on doubling the pipeline’s capacity is planned.

FLUOR TO WORK ON CANADIAN OIL SANDS PROJECT Fluor Corp has won a US$570 million contract for work on the Long Lake Project, a joint venture between OPTI Canada Inc and Nexen Canada Ltd to produce synthetic crude oil from oil sands bitumen. Long Lake is Canada’s first oil sands project to integrate steam-assisted gravity drainage extraction technology with on-site upgrading and employs a new approach to the upgrading process. Fluor will perform detailed engineering and procurement services for the three main

upgrader process units and for the utilities and offsite areas of the project. The company has been extensively involved with the project’s front-end engineering and design since December 2001. The upgrader, scheduled for startup in July 2007, will produce about 60 000 barrels of synthetic crude oil per day from heavy oil recovered from underground deposits by steam injection. Fluor will execute the work from its offices in Calgary, Canada, and New Delhi, India.

TOTAL HYDROCARBON DISCOVERY IN CASPIAN SEA Total has successfully drilled and tested its first exploration well on Kairan, located in the Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian Sea. The well was tested at a rate of 4100 barrels of oil per day. An evaluation is currently underway to determine the potential of this discovery.
