WATER & WASTEWATER CHICAGO MASTER PLAN UNDER DEVELOPMENT Engineering firm Black & Veatch and consulting engineers Greeley and Hansen have been selected by The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) to develop a master plan to guide capital improvements for the 1200 million gallon per day (mgd) Stickney Water Reclamation Plant (WRP). The Stickney WRP is one of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in the world, serving more than 2 million people in a 260 square mile area of Chicago. “Our first step is to evaluate components of the Stickney WRP that will require improvements and upgrades over the next 20 years,” said Gary Shimp, Black & Veatch Stickney project manager. The Stickney WRP has been in service since the 1930s. The master plan, which is scheduled to be completed in 2005, will enable the MWRDGC to make orderly and planned improvements to its facilities over the coming years.

VA TECH WABAG TO UPGRADE WÜRZBURG DRINKING WATER The independent German utility TWV Trinkwasserversorgung Würzburg GmbH has selected VA Tech Wabag to supply the process and electro-mechanical equipment for the refurbishment of the Würzburg, Germany water works.

The project is particularly challenging for VA Tech Wabag as the new equipment has to be installed in the existing building using extremely limited space, and the new drainage system has to be tailored to the existing concrete pressure filters. Following start-up by the end of 2004, the new plant is expected to treat 20 000 m³ water from the river Main using flocculation, precipitation, sedimentation, soil passage, ozonization, multi-layer and activated carbon filtration processes as well as sterilising by disinfection.
