PPG highlighted automotive coatings at 2017 NAIAS PPG presented a full range of automotive coatings solutions during preview days at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit's Cobo Centre on 11-12 Jan 2017. A 2016 R&D100 Award winner, EnviroPrime EPIC electrocoat uses patented metalfree catalyst technology with superior smoothness to achieve world-class appearance, improved corrosion resistance and thin-film pretreatment performance. Award-winning Andaro tint dispersions were displayed in the full range of current-production colors and in new colors available for the 2019-2020 model years. Andaro technology provides the high chroma and color saturation associated with organic dyes, in a durable pigment that meets originalequipment-manufacturer (OEM) specifications. PPG's spray-applied conductive coatings are engineered for obstacle-detection systems, selfdimming mirrors, seat warmers, airbag weightdetection systems and related applications. They also protect automotive components against radio-frequency interference (RFI), electromagnetic interference (EMI), electrostatic discharge (ESD) and lightning. PPG also featured anti-smudge (AS), antiglare (AG), anti-reflective (AR) and antifingerprint (AFP) transparent coatings for touchscreen panels. Interior coatings products include coatings for dashboards, door handles, climate control panels, gearshifts, appliques and badging. Exterior coatings encompass exclusive high-gloss monocoat finishes; etchable, ultraviolet-cure (UV-cure), high-luminance (chrome-like) coatings; and proprietary selfhealing coatings that guard automotive parts and finishes against damage from road debris. PPG also displayed paint-over-chrome-plating technologies for interior and exterior surfaces, including plastic. POWERCRON ADVANTEDGE high-edge, metal-free high-epoxy electrocoat, VERSABOND zinc-phosphate pre-treatments and DRAGONHIDE ZRE zinc-rich primers, three advanced products featuring proprietary corrosion-fighting technology, were demonstrated alongside industry-proven PPG products such as ENVIROCRON powder coatings; SPECTRACRON liquid primers, topcoats and monocoats; and DURABULL and Dragonhide heavy-duty polyurea-based bedliner coatings. PPG coatings for aluminium and steel wheels feature layering systems that integrate primers, basecoats and clearcoats, backed by PPG's complete colour-styling and colourmatching capabilities and technical expertise.

AkzoNobel seeks coatings bolt-ons AkzoNobel's Performance Coatings division has sought for more acquisitions following the purchase of BASF's industrial coatings business, a EUR 300 M segment dominated by coil coatings. The deal covers BASF's plants in Deeside, UK and South Africa plus a 400strong workforce for commercial, production, R&D and technical activities. Supported by declining oil prices, the AkzoNobel division has managed to raise its EBIT from 13% in 2015 to nearly 14% in 3Q 2016, which may even reach 12-14% by late-2018 upon complete integration. However, net profit remained at EUR 285 M while sales fell 4% in 2016. In Jan 2017, AkzoNobel finished the EUR 22 M ($23.2 M) expansion of its plant in Los Reyes, Mexico, which produces its Laurox brand organic peroxides.

Cathay Industries to present pigments for powder & coil coatings at ECS Cathay Industries 'fair package' for the European Coatings Show on 4-6 Apr 2017 in Nuremberg contains several new highlights for the coatings industry. In addition to proven quality iron oxide pigments, the manufacturer shows latest developments of the CATHAYCOAT range. The manufacturer has successfully developed precipitated reds with the specific characteristics of copperas reds. RA11YD, RA12YD and RA13YD of the CATHAYCOAT range offer optimal dispersibility due to very narrow particle size distribution. The fair presentation also covers the new pigments CATHAYCOAT Yellow YA22HR and CATHAYCOAT Yellow YS23HR. They are designed for powder and coil coatings offering an increased heat stability to respond to the needs of those specific applications. Since CATHAY INDUSTRIES recently completed the acquisition of Hoover Color Corporation, this new division will be focused on during the exhibition. As natural iron oxides Hoover Color showcases Umbers for wood coatings (eg for furniture finish systems). Natural colour properties result from semitransparency so that the wood structure remains visible after application. Beyond this, especially Raw Umbers function as neutral toners in tinting systems. Burnt Umbers withstand temperatures of up to 315 8C, which allows usage in highheat applications like coil coatings and plastics. Recovering iron oxide from abandoned coal mining drainage, Hoover Color helps cleaning water by its ecological process to convert waste streams into transparent pigments, which are used, amongst others, for paints and coatings. EnvironOxides show properties comparable to synthetically produced transparent iron oxides: durability, light stability and chemical resistance.

C OAT I N G S Specialty chemicals: imminent sale of Archroma? Citing sources close to the project, news agency Reuters claims that investment fund SK Capital Partners is about to sell Archroma for SFR 1.5 bn, including debts. According to the Bloomberg agency, UK group Synthomer (a specialist in latex and polymer emulsions) is a potential buyer. SK Capital Partners may retain a minority stake in the Swiss company's capital. Between Oct 2015 and end Sep 2016 Archroma made sales of $1.3 bn. 65% of its turnover came from its textile specialties division, 25% from specialty chemicals for paper and packaging and 10% from its coatings, adhesives and waterproofing division. Sales were equally shared between the Americas, Asia Pacific and the Europe/Middle East/Africa zone (each accounting for a third of the total). Archroma has 3000 employees and production capacities of 680,000 tonnes/y. It has 24 industrial sites worldwide with factories in Egypt, China, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, the US, Peru, Switzerland, Spain and France. SK Capital Partners created Archroma in 2013 following its acquisition of 3 divisions (textile products, paper treatment chemicals and emulsions) from Swiss group Clariant for EUR 400 M+. Clariant was spun off from Swiss group Sandoz in 1995 and in 1997 acquired German group Hoechst's specialty chemicals. In 2014 Archroma acquired a 49% stake in M Dohmen (a Swiss producer of colorants and textile specialties) and BASF's textile products.

DuPont to pour $200 M into the Experimental Station On 9 Jan 2017, DuPont announced its plans to upgrade its Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE, US, with a budget of $200 M for the next several years before its merger with Dow Chemical. The project includes optimizing its laboratories, upgrading offices, and creating space for what the firm dubbed as "networked collaboration and innovation.'' The 150-acre complex will be reconfigured to integrate its R&D efforts from similar businesses. The Experimental Station has a few occupants, including two companies previously part of DuPont, the paint business Axalta and chemical producer Chemours, and the drug firm Incyte. Furthermore, the Experimental Station upgrade will accommodate the division of DuPont after its integration with Dow, which is slated to conclude in the next weeks. Within two years of the amalgamation, DowDuPont will be divided into three independent companies, including a materials science company based in Midland, MI, and an agriculture and specialty products companies in Wilmington. In Dec 2016, Dow announced that it will construct a new R&D center in Midland with 200 scientists.
