calcium increase the solubility of aluminum in lead [1|. Liquid aluminum is in equilibrium with Ca3Bi2, Ca 2 Pb, Ca2Sn or Ca 3 Sb 2 [2, 3]. Barium additions to aluminum-copper or aluminum-magnesium alloys decrease sharply the liquid-gas surface tension [4]; additions to aluminum-magnesium alloys do not affect appreciably the susceptibility to exfoliation [5]. The aluminum—barium-silicon diagram is probably very similar to the aluminum-calcium-silicon one, with the solid solubility of silicon reduced by barium additions. Additions of 2.5% Ba to aluminum-silicon alloys with 0.5-1.5% Si have no effect on the hardness, both in the as-quenched temper and after aging 48 hr at 430 °K [6].
