Albemarle reports 3Q 2013 results: catalysts Albermarle Corp’s generated net sales for catalysts segment in 3Q 2013 is $226.0 M, a 10% decrease from net sales in 3Q 2012. This was due to unfavourable pricing in refinery catalysts solutions on lower metals, pass through surcharges and unfavourable performance catalyst solutions volumes and pricing. Income for the segment was $57.5 M in 3Q 2013, down by 7% from 3Q 2012 results of $61.8 M. This was contributed by the higher manufacturing costs, lower pricing in performance catalysts solutions, and lower equity income from its unconsolidated jvs partly offset by higher refinery catalysts volumes and lower variable input costs. Clariant and Lummus Novolen in catalyst development partnership The Catalysts Division of Swiss Clariant Group and CB&I’s Lummus Novolen Technology GmbH plan to combine and intensify their R&D efforts in order to develop improved polypropylene catalysts and Donor technologies. The new catalysts are developed in a new and advanced production facility for Ziegler-Natta catalysts. The companies signed a long-term partnership agreement in Aug 2013. Both Clariant and Lummus Novolen will invest around SFR 65 M in a production facility for PP catalysts at Clariant’s site in Louisville, KY, in the US. The plant is scheduled to come on-stream in 2015. Clariant predicts that the market for ZieglerNatta catalysts will grow above 5%/y during the next 5 years. Clariant introduces new low temperature bleaching catalysts Clariant introduces two bleach catalysts, namely, Peractive MnOx and Peractive MnTACN. These products are designed for low temperature automatic dishwashing (ADW) applications. The company has focused on using manganesebased bleach catalyst because manganese is less toxic than nickel, chromium, or cobalt salts. Peractive MnOx is non-mutagenic, non-toxic, non-sensitizing, non-irritant, and safe to use in consumer products.
