of magnitude higher than in the hypolinmion. The most likely precursor for DMS is algal dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), which showed similar vertical profiles. Microorganisms in the pond, especially in the metalimnion, can decompose DMSP to DMS, while photosynthetic sulfur bacteria in the hypolimnion can consume DMS. DMS production and consumption in Salt Pond has been estimated considering production of DMS in the epilimnion and metalimnion, removal of DMS via gas exchange to the atmosphere, tidal exchange, and microbial consumption. The seasonal fluctuations of the concentration of nitrogenous compounds in sediments was investigated for three regions of the Seto Inland Sea in Japan; the variation of nitrogenous compounds in sediments was also studied in a laboratory experiment. Ammonium was the major component and organic nitrogen was the next most important. It was possible to explain the seasonal fluctuation of nitrogenous compounds in terms of the rates of the metabolic pathways of nitrogen in the sediments. Ammonium did not occur from solubilization of particulate organic nitrogen followed by mineralization, but from direct mineralization of particulate organic nitrogen in sediments.
