Alkaloids: Chemical and Biological Perspectives Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Edited by S. William Pelletier. Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 605 Third Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10158 U.S.A., 1983, English language, price Vol. 1: US$ 65 and Vol. 2: US$ 60. These two volumes are the first in a new series with the scope to give an update review about compounds classified chemically and biologically as alkaloids. The Chief Editor is Professor S. William Pelletier, who is Director at the Institute for Natural Products Research at the University of Georgia, Athens. About twenty other experts in the field have contributed to the chapters in these two volumes. In the first volume arthropod alkaloids, tobacco alkaloids, diterpenoid alkaloids and indole alkaloids belo’nging to the plant families Apocynaceae, Loganiaceae and Rubiaceae are described. In the second volume imidazole alkaloids, quinolizidine alkaloids of the Leguminosae and the maytansinoid alkaloids are described. One chapter in the second volume deals with different methods for structure elucidation, e.g. X-ray crystallography. The chapters about alkaloids deal with different informations depending on the experts and the literature reviewed. In most cases the chemical structure, the biogenesis, the distribution and the biological, pharmacological and chemical properties of the alkaloids are described. The layout of the book is good and there are numerous illustrations, especially on the configuration of alkaloids. The volumes include a subject and organism index, which make the books useful handbooks. Therefore, even though this new series has limited interest for the general forensic scientist the books can be recommended to the well-supplied library. Hanne Christensen, Copenhagen
