From the AANP President All Aboard. Or Not!
O
ne of the buzzwords heard frequently around the Beltway is interprofessional collaboration, a concept more real than its nomenclature would suggest. We are at a crossroads in this country in terms of health care. With more and more patients seeking primary care, no single discipline will be able to meet all the needs. It is time to leave our silos and work as a team to provide the best quality care possible for all patients. To do so is going to involve a community effort by all health care providers (HCPs). I recently had the privilege of attending a workshop sponsored by the American College of Gynecology along with colleagues from pharmacy, midwifery, obstetrics and gynecology, primary care physicians, NPs, PAs, patient care advocates, and several other organizations. Our goal was to look at ways of enhancing a multidisciplinary approach to health care that is directed at improving outcomes. One issue we all agreed on was that the “hierarchical” and “captain of the ship” models of the past are no longer relevant in today’s health care environment. If we are to be successful in our ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes, we must include the contributions of all HCPs. The first step in this process is to respect the contributions of all colleagues. While this task force is still in a growth stage, it has shown a level of maturity that heretofore has been nonexistent. Multiple disciplines are finally communicating openly with each other and developing a cooperative plan to recognize and respect each other’s contributions to patient care. In essence we have all boarded the same train with the same goals. Those who have failed to board the train will be left standing at the station as we pass them by. NPs are on board and proud to be part of this process! Kenneth P. Miller, PhD, RN, CFNP, FAAN, FAANP 1555-4155/14/$ see front matter © 2014 Elsevier, Inc.
