Although no nuclear reactors have come on line since 1996, the installed generating capacity increased by 1100 MWe during the last four years as a result of capacity uprates. If all of the uprates approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission since January 2001 are implemented, this would add approximately 1850 net MWe to the US’s nuclear capacity. FRAMATOME ANP TENDERS FOR FINNISH NUCLEAR UNIT Framatome ANP has submitted a tender to Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) for the fifth Finnish nuclear power plant. The Framatome ANP tender offers two reactor types: the EPR, a pressurized water reactor and the SWR 1000, a boiling water reactor. The EPR and SWR 1000 were developed by Framatome ANP with the involvement of European nuclear power plant operators, research institutes and safety authorities.

ALSTOM TO UPGRADE FINNISH FACILITY Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) has awarded Alstom a contract worth more than 35 million to upgrade the Olkiluoto nuclear power station (2 units of 870 MW each) near Rauma, Finland. The contract covers a complete retrofit of the two existing high pressure (HP) steam turbines, including two new casings, and the retrofit of the two HP rotors with new

blading, four moisture-separators-reheaters and associated thermal equipment. The first delivery will take place in 2005 and the second in 2006. The project will be managed by Alstom, Sweden.

FW TO SUPPLY WORLD’S FIRST SUPERCRITICAL CFB BOILER Foster Wheeler Energia Oy has achieved a double worldfirst in solid-fuel combustion technology: a contract for the world’s first supercritical circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler that will also be the world’s largest CFB unit. The follows confirmation by Poland’s Poludniowy Koncern Energetyczny that its US$146 million order for a 460 MWe boiler island for a power plant at Lagisza, Poland, placed at the end of last year, will feature supercritical CFB technology. Built around once-through unit supercritical technology, the plant will use 5% less fuel per GWh of electricity generated than conventional drumbased solid fuel-fired boilers.

ALSTOM SELECTED FOR CANADIAN HYDRO PLANT Société d'Énergie de la Baie James, a Hydro Québec subsidiary, has awarded Alstom a 38 million contract for the engineering, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of three 160 MW turbogenerator sets and their auxiliaries at the Canadian hydroelectric power plant Eastmain 1A. Alstom’s hydro division in Canada will manage the project. Engineering work has already started, while commissioning on the last turbinegenerator set is scheduled for December 2006.

PETROCHEMICALS BP PLANS WORLD-SCALE PTA PLANT IN BELGIUM BP has started detailed engineering design for the construction of a new worldscale purified terephthalic acid (PTA) production plant at its Geel petrochemicals site in Belgium. The detailed design for the new plant will be carried out by Technip Italy over the next nine months. Subject to final BP and other approvals, the company anticipates that construction on the new plant will begin in 2004 with the plant coming on stream in early 2006. The plans envisage building a 700 000 tonnes per year PTA plant at Geel. Output from the plant will be mainly targeted at the European market, particularly at polyethylene terephthalate (PET) production, for which PTA is a core feedstock.

FOOD PROCESSING SMITHFIELD FOODS TO BUILD WASTE-TOENERGY UNIT Smithfield Foods Inc is investing US$20 million to build a facility that converts swine waste into biodiesel vehicle fuel. Smithfield will be the major partner in BEST BioFuel, LLC, a partnership that will construct the project at Smithfield-owned swine production facilities near Milford, Utah. The project will involve constructing a collection system to pump waste to a central processing facility where it

will be concentrated. The concentrated liquid will then be introduced into a second facility that produces biogas, which will then be piped to an enclosed plant where thermocatalytic processes convert it into biomethanol. Construction is scheduled to start in April, and the facility could start producing fuels as early as October.

CHEMICALS JACOBS WINS ATOFINA CONTRACT Jacobs Engineering Group will provide engineering design, global procurement and construction management services to build a grassroots plant for Atofina Chemicals at the company’s Beaumont, Texas facility. Commercial production of methylthiopropionaldehyde (MMP) will begin in the first quarter of 2005.

PHARMACEUTICALS JACOBS SECURES JANSSEN IRISH API CONTRACT A Jacobs Engineering Group Inc subsidiary has won a contract from Janssen Pharmaceuticals Ltd to provide engineering services for a new 3 Production Module active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) manufacturing facility at Janssen’s existing site at Little Island, Co Cork, Ireland. Jacobs will design the facility to meet future production and expansion requirements. Janssen will use its new facility for the expanded manufacture of existing products and a new aseptic API product.
