Local and remote networking packages Two communications packages have been introduced by AES Data (UK) to provide customers with local area and remote networking capabilities. Aesnet links local work groups, while Aesgate links Aesnet with local or remote networks and terminals. Using a straight line 'bus' structure over a single length of triax cable, Aesnet can deliver information to operating nodes or network addresses over distances up to 3 km. It allows individual network users to access common network resources, including background processing, batch communications, printing, messaging and file access. Aesnet can be used to connect

the AES 7300 distributed office system with other workstations, including those of other vendors. Using the Aesop software package, personal computers can also be linked directly into Aesnet. Aesgate provides the external communications gateway through which information can flow in and out of the local or remote office environment. It can support up to six remote networks or PCs using asynchronous communications. The AES 7300 also supports Aesgate. Creation of a wide area network can be achieved through direct links, through an office PABX or by connection to the public switched telephone network. With auto dial and auto receive capabilities, connections to Aesgate are transparent tothe user. (AES Data (UK) Ltd., 170 Windmill Road, Sunbury-on-Tharnes, Middx TW76 7HH, UK. A computer intercommunications unit that can serve as an alternative to the local area network for installations of up to eight devices has been announce d by Bowthorpe Microsystems. The Micromodex is aimed at users of data/information systems where computers and computer peripherals function as separate entities and require only intermittent intercommunication. The product consists of two units: the first allows a computer/ peripheral to request interconnection with another, while the second via a modem auto-dialler, allows each computer/peripheral to access remote equipment on command using ten stored telephone numbers. Micromodex has seven RS232-C or RS422 communication line interfaces. Transmission format is 2 400 baud asynchronous (5 to 8 data bits parity optional). An X.21 interceptor unit has been launched by Whiteley Electronics. The unit is designed for the monitoring, testing and analysis of CCITT (1984) X.21 interfaces on public data communications equipment. It is intended primarily for installation, maintenance and service engineers, but the company say it can also help in the design of X.21 interfaces. The Whiteley Intercepter is an active device which appears 'transparent' to the call control, timing and data signals while monitoring each of the circuits. The tester may also be used to generate signals manually, so simulating most test conditions. It is supplied in a carrying case, together with a power unit, 15-way 'D' connector extension lead and user guide (Whiteley Electronics Ltd., Victoria Street, Mansfield, Notts. NG18 5RW, UK.
