Suez expands in India

F

rench water treatment company Suez has been awarded six new municipal water and wastewater

treatment contracts worth E67 million with the Bangalore Water & Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and the Public Health and Engineering Department of the Rajasthani State Government in India. Suez is to construct and operate two units for the TK Halli drinking water production plant, located about 90 km from Bangalore. The contract covers the construction and installation of a unit producing 300 million litres of drinking water per day and the rehabilitation of an existing unit that also produces 300 million litres per day. Suez has already built two units for the TK Halli plant, which it has been operating since 2009. Suez will also design, build and operate the Kengeri wastewater treatment plant, located south-west of Bangalore. Funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the 60 000 m3/day plant will treat the wastewater produced by more than 400 000 people. In Rajasthan, Suez is to design, build and operate 150 of its UCD units in Bikaner, Hanumangarh and Sri Ganganagar. The UCD (Degrémont compact units) is a complete, self-contained station for the production of drinking water. The 150 units will be built over a two-year period and then operated by Suez for five years. The units will have a production capacity of between 500 and 3000 m3/day. Meanwhile Suez has entered into an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Driplex, an Indian company that provides water treatment solutions for industrial customers in India and overseas. Founded in 1974 and headquartered in New Delhi, Driplex specialises in engineering, design, manufacturing and commissioning of effluent and process water treatment plants for the power, oil & gas and other industrial sectors. The company has more than 350 employees. “This investment in Driplex is in line with Suez’s strategy to develop its industrial activity and its business internationally, particularly in fast growing markets like India, where the group is already managing water distribution services for major municipalities such as Mumbai and New Delhi and has built more than 200 water treatment plants. The industrial water market in India offers substantial opportunities for development and our goal is to become a strategic partner for industries, sustainably managing their resources so that they can achieve their economic and environmental performance objectives and tackle new industrial challenges,” said JeanLouis Chaussade, CEO of Suez.
