American Academy of Ophthalmology Awards 1984 Each year the Academy recognizes leadership in and contributions to ophthalmology by selecting Guests of Honor and presenting Honor Awards. On occasion, the Academy also presents the Distinguished Service Award, and for the first time this year, will recognize nearly 80 members with Senior Honor Awards. The year's Guests of Honor have been chosen by Academy President Whitney G. Sampson, MD, in recognition of their contributions to the advancement of the art and science of ophthalmology. The DistirWUiIhed Public Service Award is presented to an individual or organization that has contributed significantly to the specialty of ophthalmology and to the cure or prevention of eye disease. This year, there are three Distinguished Public Service Award recipients.
Honor and Senior Honor A. . . . are based on a system of points distributed for participation in scientific papers, exhibits, posters, and instruction courses at the Annual Meeting; Regional Update Courses; and other continuing education programs of the Academy. One point is awarded for each educational effort, up to a maximum of two points each year.
Senior Honor Awards are presented to those who have accumulated 30 points or more through participation in Academy education programs, and Honor Awards to those who have earned 10 points or more. This year's award recipients are pictured on the following pages.

Guests of Honor
THEODORE STEINBERG, MD Theodore Steinberg, MD, is the quintessential professional: Physician, attorney, activist and friend of all who labor to advance the art and science of the practice of medicine and especially of ophthalmology.
In addition to serving organized medicine at all levels in his adopted state of California, Dr. Steinberg served as president of the former American Association of Ophthalmology, and as director of the Academy from 1980 through 1983. He also received the Academy's Honor Award in 1983 for contributions to its education programs.
Beginning in the mid-l 960s, when he stood almost alone in opposing the initial threat to ophthalmology posed by the infamous Hart Committee of the US Senate, through the turbulent '70s with the optometric legislative intrusion into medical practice, and into this decade's increasing governmental regulation of physicians, Dr. Steinberg has labored tirelessly to assure that the positive voice of medicine was heard.
Dr. Steinberg has served in the Federation of the American Medical Association for nearly two decades, representing both his county and state associations. For the last decade, he has represented both the former Association and the current Academy in the American Medical Association House of Delegates, initially as a delegate and, currently, as the chairman of the Section Council on Ophthalmology.
Dr. Steinberg was one of the handful of individuals who, with patience, understanding, and the proper measure of vision and compromise at the correct time, negotiated the merger in 1981 of the Academy and the former American Association of Ophthalmology into the dynamic Academy of today, which represents all segments of ophthalmology.
Dr. Steinberg continues an active and vibrant private practice of ophthalmology just south of the San Andreas fault in Fresno, California.

LAWRENCE WINOGRAD, MD Lawrence Winograd, MD, has devoted a major portion of his professional career to the advancement of the art and science of ophthalmology. As a young private practicing ophthalmologist, he was among the first to challenge the right of non-medical practitioners to utilize prescription drugs early in the 1970s, pursuing the case into the state court of Colorado, a unique achievement at that time.
meeting of the Association's House of Delegates, when the issue of the merger was deliberated, Dr. Winograd's sensitive and positive leadership facilitated the decision of the House to merge the two organizations. For a number of years prior to the merger, Dr. Winograd served as editor of the Association's publication, 1be Ophthalmologist; and he continued this duty during the initial year of the merger. When this publication was subsequently merged into the current augmented format of the Argus, Dr. Winograd continued to serve in the role of editorial consultant for social and economic affairs.
Dr. Winograd subsequently assumed significant leadership roles in the former American Association of Ophthalmology. When the merger negotiations were initiated in 1981 between the Academy and the former Association, Dr. Winograd was serving as speaker of the Association's House of Delegates, and was among the handful of individuals who negotiated positively to accomplish this objective. As presiding officer of the special

THOMAS D. DUANE, MD, PhD Thomas D. Duane, MD, PhD, has served ophthalmology admirably over three decades as researcher, author, teacher and advocate for the specialty of ophthalmology. His fivevolume compilation of Clinical Ophthalmology and threevolume set of Biomedical Foundations of Ophthalmology have assured his place in ophthalmic history as the American version of "Duke-Elder."
Dr. Duane also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Academy from 1979 to 1982, . and is currently a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a past member of the Association of University Professors in Ophthalmology and the National Advisory Eye Council. Dr. Duane served as ophthalmologist-in-chief of the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia for eight years, seeing it through its rebuilding and relocation program prior to his retirement in 1982. As professor of ophthalmology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, he divides his time between Philadelphia and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. .
Beyond these prestigious academic accomplishments, Dr. Duane also distinguished himself in his service to organized ophthalmology. He served through the '70s as secretary of the Section Council on Ophthalmology of the American Medical Association and ended his service to the Council as its chairman in 1980. Dr. Duane received the Section Council's Lucien Howe Medal in 1981; this award is to given in honor of outstanding contributions ophthalmology, and has been awarded to only 12 individuals in the last 30 years.

LAWRENCE A. ZUPAN, CAE Lawrence A. Zupan, CAE, retired as a member of the Academy staff on June 30, 1984, after 40 years in the service of medicine and ophthalmology. For 18 of those years, he was the executive secretary of the former American Association of Ophthalmology until its merger with the Academy in 1981. Following the merger, he served as the associate director of the Academy's Washington Office of Governmental Relations until his retirement.
development of the Office of Governmental Relations Committee for State Affairs into the dynamic group it is today. Those who have had the opportunity and privilege of working closely with Larry for the last 20 years recognize his devotion and loyalty to the profession of medicine and the specialty of ophthalmology. Few "execs" have demonstrated the degree of commitment to the principles of their organizations, which has been the hallmark of Larry Zupan's long and distinguished career in the service of ophthalmology.
Larry's forte within the former American Association of Ophthalmology and with the Academy until his retirement was in the coordination of state affairs. He was, and still is, on a first-name basis with the professional leadership and staff of virtually every state ophthalmological organization. Larry's knowledge of state activities, and his positive and supportive attitude during the merger transition was a significant factor in the
It is prophetic that for one who spent his "salad days" laboring among the bureaucrats of the District of Columbia, Mr. Zupan will spend his golden days in Vienna, Virginia, assiduously pursuing his favorite hobby, gardening.

MARY McCAMBRIDGE Mary McCambridge is indeed the paragon of faithful, dedicated and unpretentious service to her church, family and employer. Mary has worked within the medical environment for 37 years, the last 22 of which have been for ophthalmology. Joining the former American Association of Ophthalmology in 1963, Mary labored tirelessly for the Association until its merger with the Academy in 1981; and it was only natural that she continued employment with the Academy subsequent to the merger.
degree at all with Mary over the past two decades will attest to her loyalty and devotion to the former American Association of Ophthalmology and the current Academy. In honoring Miss McCambridge with this award, the Board of Directors is indeed honoring all of the current executive staff and employees of the Academy for their dedication and exemplary service to medicine and ophthalmology. It is, however, the prerogative of the President to select the "guidon"; and for nineteen hundred and eighty-four, it is Mary M. McCambridge.
Mary is one of those rare wage-earners who doesn't know what a time-
