APPROXIMATELY275 scientists and practitioners &tended the 35th annual American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists Conference at the Palacio de1 Rio Hilton in San Antonio, Texas (21-24 July 1990). The scientific sessions included presentations on veterinary parasitology in the 90s protozoa1 myeloencephalitis, history of parasitology, immunity, chemotheraphy, epidemiology, clinical reports, education in veterinary parasitology, control/production/ prevalence, biochemistry, anthelmintic resistance, heartworm, and public health. A joint AAVP-AVMA symposium was held on Tuesday, 24 July. The focus of the Tuesday session was ‘parasitic zoonosis’; presentations were given by invited speakers on larva migrans, Lyme disease, trichinellosis, giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis. Awards The 1990 Distinguished Veterinary Parasitologist Award was presented to Dr William C. Campbell, Senior Scientist and Director of Research & Product Development, Merck Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories, and Professor at Drew University. Dr Campbell is well known both domestically and internationally. He has had a very distinguished career in parasitology and has made many significant contributions to the field. He has published work pertaining to many important parasites and diseases of veterinary significance. In addition to these efforts, he was instrumental in the discovery and development of the most widely used medicinal in veterinary medicine, avermectin. He also played a significant role in the development of this drug for the treatment of human onchocerciasis. Dr Campbell did postdoctoral work at Cambridge University, has been an Inter-American Fellow in Tropical Medicine at Louisiana State University, and serves as Director of the Research & Development Laboratory in New South Wales, Australia. Bill serves on the editorial boards of four scientific journals, is the editor of one book, co-editor of another, and author or co-author of more than 140 research publications. Dr Campbell holds adjunct professorships at both the University of Pennsylvania and the New York College of Medicine, and recently was appointed to the staff at
Drew University. The award was accompanied by an honorarium provided by Smith Kline Beecham. The 1990 Hoechst-Roussel Graduate Student Award was granted to Dr James C. Parsons, a graduate student at Colorado State University, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biological Sciences. Dr Parsons has made significant contributions to the understanding of larval toxocariasis in paratenic hosts, and his dissertation focuses on the immunobiology of murine toxocariasis. He has authored four manuscripts and another two are in press; he also wrote a chapter on ascarid infections in dogs and cats which was included in the Veterinary Clinics of North America/Small Animal issue on parasitic infections. Jim will complete his doctorate work at Colorado State in 1990. Dr Bert Stromberg, University of Minnesota, Immediate Past-President of the AAVP, was recognized for his efforts and contributions to the organization. New Oficers Dr Roger K.
