ANNUAL MEETING, SEPTEMBER 17- 18, 1992, BETHESDA, MARYLAND The annual meeting of the American College of Epidemiology will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland on September 17-18, 1992. The theme of the meeting is “Women and Health.” Presentations will focus on a number of major causes of morbidity and mortality in women including coronary heart disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, sexually-transmitted diseases and injuries and violence. A number of issues related to these topics will be discussed including the role of diet in breast and colon cancer, the role of estrogen replacement therapy in breast cancer and cardiovascular disease, breast cancer screening guidelines for women 40 to 49 and over 65 years, the differential use (and recommendation for use) of health services among women, and racial/ethnic differences in health outcomes and access to care: Other topics will include ethical, legal, and methodologic issues to be considered in doing research on women. Some topics to be discussed include the need for scientific and ethical guidelines to use in deciding when protocols should be required to include women, inclusion of pre-menopausal women in clinical trials, stopping rules for clinical trials, especially those with multiple endpoints, and identifying appropriate research strategies for studies of women. The pros and cons of on-going and proposed clinical and community trials will be discussed, including the Tamoxifen trial and the Women’s Health Initiative. Other research initiatives on women such as the Nurses’ Health Study also will be presented. The format for the meeting will be a series of symposia with invited speakers as well as contributed papers and poster sessions. Sir Richard Doll has been selected as the recipient of the 1992 Lilienfeld award. Abstracts on the topics described above as well as abstracts on other topics related to women’s health are encouraged.
