Richard S. Katz, 'But how many Candidates should we have in Donegal? Numbers of Nominees and Electoral Efficiency in Ireland', British Journal of Political Science, 11: 1, January 1981, pp. 117-123 (including a comment by A. S. Cohan). This article examines the effects of nomination strategies under the STV electoral system used in Ireland. Does 'over-nomination' hurt the chances of a party electing the maximum number of deputies? D. Roderick Kiewiet, 'Policy-oriented Voting in response to Economic Issues', American Political Science Review, 75: 2, June 1981, pp. 448 459. This article examines the electoral effects of inflation and unemployment as (1) problems directly experienced by the individual and (2) problems deemed serious for the nation. James H. Kublinski and Darrell M. West, 'Economic Expectations and Voting Behaviour in United States House and Senate Elections', American Political Science Review, 75: 2, June 1981, pp. 436-447. By using the 1978 National Election Study, the authors show that economic voting is a significant factor in Senate but not in House elections, presumably due to the differences in electoral context. There is also no guarantee that the public will be able to influence the direction of macro-economic policy. G&rard Le Gall, 'Le$on des parteilles: vers une 6lection presidentielle ind6cise', Revue

politique etparlementaire, January-February 1981, 83, No. 890, pp. 58-68. Examines political trends in by-elections 1980. G~rard Le Gall, ' D u recul de la droite vers l'hSg~monie du P.S.', Revue politique et

G~rard Le Gall, 'Le nouvel ordre 8lectoral', Revue politique et parlementaire, July August 1981, 83, No. 893, pp. 1-32. An analysis of the 1981 election to the National Assembly. Michael Marsh, 'Electoral Preferences in Irish Recruitment: The 1977 Election', European

Journal of Political Research, 9: 1, March 1981, pp. 61-74. What are the implications of the use of STV for legislative recruitment in Ireland? Apparently voters' preferences are determined more by candidates' political records than by their social background or even position on the ballot paper. Pierre Martin, 'Les 8lections l&gislatives partielles en France de 1973 ~t 1980: M~canismes et enseignments', Revuefranfaise de sciencepolitique, 31: 3, June 1981, pp. 535-562. An analysis of by-elections in France 1973-1980. Helmut Norpoth and Kendall L. Baker, 'Mass Media Use and Electoral Choice in West Germany', Comparative Politics, 13: 1, October 1980, pp. 1-14. An examination of the claim that the mass media exercise a strong influence upon people's political attitudes and behaviour, focusing upon the West German electorate during the 1960s and 1970s. The analysis shows that exposure to political communication is conducive not so much to change of electoral choice as to stability. Hannu Nurmi, 'On the Properties of Voting Systems', Scandinavian Political Studies, 4: 1, 1981, pp. 19-32. How to choose the 'best' voting procedure for making collective decisions? The methods examined are the simple majority rule, Borda count, and approval voting.
