1998 Self-assessment Examination This examination is offered as a self-education exercise by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and is available to the medical profession, espcially those involved with care of the hand. The exam is designed to assist the physician in reviewing basic principles of hand care as well as keeping the physician current with new developments and concepts. The examination covers diagnostic and theraputic problems, both surgical and nonoperative, basic science knowledge, and fundamental principles of hand surgery. The interpretation of illustrative material (clinical photographs and radiographs) is an integral part of this examination. The deadline for registration is April 1, 1998. Registrants will receive the book by mail in mid-April and the answer sheet must be returned by June 3, 1998 for scoring. The cost is $90 for ASSH members, and $100 for nonmembers.
Credit Hours - Category 1 - The American Soceity for Surgery of the Hand designates this continuing education activity for 20 hours in Category 1 of the Physicians Recognition Award if you return your answer sheet for computer scoring by June 3, 1998. In addition, you will receive the Discussioa Book and a printout of your own score, as compared to all examinees.

9 Outcome Studies Grants The American Society for Surgery of the Hand, in conjunction with the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand, provides grant funding to initiate outcome studies projects. Proposals submitted for funding must make use of recognized and well documented outcomes instruments such as the SF-36, Sickness Impact Profile, Arthritis Impact M e a s u r e m e n t Scale, etc., and must address an issue of importance to hand surgery. T h e r e are no s p e c i f i c e l i g i b i l i t y r e q u i r e m e n t s , although the Society e n c o u r a g e s a p p l i c a t i o n s from surgeons and other allied health personnel who have a primary interest in hand surgery. 9 Research Grants The American Society for Surgery of the Hand, in conjunction with the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand, provides research grants for investigations concerned with the improvement and function of the deformed or disabled hand. The funds will be used in the form of seed grants to develop pilot or d e m o n stration projects to the point where they might attract more substantial money from larger granting agencies. Investigators need not limit their work to surgical aspects of the hand, and grant recipients need not be hand surgeons. Hand Surgery Guide to the ICD-9-CM Second Edition
The second edition of this complete reference guide was created by the Society's Coding Committee as a hand surgery guide to the ICD-9-CM. The guide is intended for use by hand surgeons, secretaries, insurance clerks, and other personnel who need to know the ICD-9-CM diagnostic codes in order to complete insurance forms and other documents. Diagnoses are listed in both alphabetical and numerical order; the alphabetical section contains a listing of the common name descriptions used in hand surgery together with the ICD-9-CM codes and published 1CD-9-CM descriptions. These guidelines, developed by the ASSH Clinical Guidelines Committee in response to requests by thirdparty payers, consumers, and hand surgeons, contain information about the treatment for individuals with upper extremity injuries or other physical conditions.
