ProgramCommittee ThomasRyan,MD, Chair Bijoy K. Khandheria,MD, Co-Chair
Purpose Echocardiography is an established and important technique for the diagnosis and management of a wide range of cardiovascular disorders. Over the past several years, the clinical use of echocardiography has expanded significantly. The 1lth Annual Scientific Sessions of the American Society of Echocardiography are an opportunity for the membership and all interested practitioners - including cardiologists, internists, primary care physicians, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, surgeons, cardiac sonographers, research scientists, and industry representatives - to explore emerging issues and developments in the field.
Format The 4-day program includes invited lecturers, manufacturers' exhibits, symposia, and abstract and poster presentations describing original work. The featured speakers are national and international leaders and teachers in the field of echocardiography, and the format allows participants considerable interaction with the faculty. In addition to structured symposia summarizing the latest major clinical developments, the program features scientific abstract presentations, meetthe-expert panels, interactive case

presentations with an audience response system, cardiac sonographer essentials and how-to sessions, controversies, self-assessment test sessions for improving skills by reading cases with the experts, and an opportunity to see and work with the latest in ultrasound imaging, stress echo and digital image management equipment. Two entertaining evening functions will provide an opportunity for social interaction among participants and faculty, including a gala evening of dinner and entertainment at the Navy Pier and the President's Reception. The annual Edler Lecture is a comerstone of education in echocardiography presented each year by one of the foremost authorities in the field. This year, Dr. Abdul Jamil Tajik will present the Edler Lecture immediately following the Research Award presentations which begin at 7:50 a.m. on Monday. Special lunch sessions include clinical trials, legislative and regulatory issues, pediatric alternative imaging techniques, and a motivational speaker especially for cardiac sonographers. ASE's three Councils - Council on Cardiac Sonography, Council on Intraoperative Echocardiography, and Council on Pediatric Echocardiography - will have luncheon meetings during the sessions. Intraoperative echocardiography will be taught during a symposium on Sunday and in numerous additional sessions throughout the meeting. These sessions will present lectures on the various aspects of intraoperative echocardiography by noted experts in the field and challenging ease presentations by a panel of experts with active audience participa-

tion. There will be a Pediatric Track throughout the program to explore issues in pediatric echocardiography. The Sonographer Sessions, organized by the ASE Council on Cardiac Sonography, will focus on the mechanics of obtaining appropriate echo/ Doppler images and hemodynmnics.
Audience ASE'S scientific sessions will benefit all individuals interested in the multiple applications of echocardiography. The novice and advanced participant will have ample educational opportunity. Participation should include individuals from the fields of cardiac sonography, cardiovascular anesthesiology, cardiovascular medicine, cardiovascular surgery, pediatric cardiology, neurology, and nursing, as well as medical residents/fellows and students.
CMECredits The American Society of Echocardiography is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians,
The American Society of Echocardiography designates the 3-day Monday through Wednesday sessions as a continuing medical education activity for up to 22 credit hours in Category 1 of the Physicians' Recognition Award of the American Medical Association and the Intraoperative TEE Symposium on Sunday for up to 7 additional credit hours in Category 1 of the PRA.
