Ametek launches AP filter cartridge range
Reduced operating costs resuited from t h e fitting of Plastok New Technology continuous polypropylene filter cartridges in place of standard spun-wound cartridges in a test tank used by the UK Sea Fish Industry Authority for research & development. Sea water used in the tank is recycled through the filter to remove fine particles and other solid contaminants. Not only was the time needed to achieve the required standard of water clarification reduced by more than one third, but over a 12-month evaluation period the average cartridge life proved longer by more t h a n 30%, and there were substantial savings in downtime and labour costs. Produced from microfibril, non-migratory, continuous polypropylene filament, these CPP cartridges combine the ability to handle high flow rates with greatly increased contaminant-holding capacity, enhanced resistance to blinding or blockage, a n d minimised risk of p r o d u c t c o n t a m i n a t i o n from shred-
Described by the company as a significant t e c h n o l o g i c a l advance in low-cost, quality absolute filtration, Ametek's new AP range of filter cartridges enables 100% particulate removal efficiency of 0.5 #m and above without the use of a membrane medium. This is achieved with a pleated polypropylene graded density fibre medium, w h i c h n o t o n l y gives a n obvious high d i r t l o a d i n g and low pressure drop, but which is considerably more cost-effective than traditional membrane technology. The filter cartridges are manufactured at the Ametek plant in Billingham, U K This
ding or fibre migration. In c o n t r a s t wit~ spunwound cartridges in which the yarns lying parallel to each other in a regular pattern tend to restrict the flow, in t h e CPP c a r t r i d g e t h e filaments are intermingled, allowing for higher flow rates and with micropores between the fibrils providing millions of tiny, dirt-catching spaces. Manufactured as standard in 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 150 /zm sizes, these CPP filter cartridges can be supplied in l e n g t h s and d i a m e t e r s to customer specifications. New Technology CPP filter cartridges are the latest addit i o n to a w i d e r a n g e of filtration products manufactured by Plastok Associates, which specialises in filters, cartridges, m e s h e s , gauzes, screens etc. for food, chemical, pharmaceutical, water & waste treatment and general industrial applications. Prize for microfiltration module design The i n t e r n a t i o n a l filtration and separations Memtec group has won second prize in the World's Best Plastics P r o d u c t s c a t e g o r y of t h e Neste Forma Finlandia 3 International Plastics Design Competition, for its M10 continuous microfiltration module. Eight designs, including the M10 module, were named as winners from 739 entries. Memtec won in conjunction with the Australian design consultancy Nielsen Design. The M10 system is designed a r o u n d a p a t e n t e d hollow fibre membrane, which r e m o v e s solids and microorganisms to 0.2 # m from a liquid stream. The criterion was to pack a filter m e m b r a n e of large surface area into cartridges, which are built up into modules. Each cartridge contains 12 km of continuously extruded hollow fibre membrane, manufactured from polypropyiene or PVDF, giving a filtration surface area of 10 m 2 within a footprint of only 334 cm 2. The careful selection of l o w - t o x i c i t y m a t e r i a l s has Filtration & Separation
allowed the modules to be approved for municipal potable w a t e r use in the UK, France, Germany and the US. Prior to market launch of the M10 module, extensive development work validated the design parameters for a 15-year operational life. Modularity allows components to be easily c h a n g e d or dismantled when the membrane filters need to. be replaced. The manifold a r r a n g e m e n t permits up to 90 modules in one array, and i n d i v i d u a l modules can be isolated. Various engineering polymers provide a cost-effective design by minimising material usage, since wall sections and radii can be allocated exactly according to structural needs.
includes injection moulding of t h e p r e c i s i o n - m o u l d e d end-caps and outer s u p p o r t cages. The filtration range comes in seven grades from 0.5 to 40 #m absolute efficiencies -- and in stand a r d 10 inch to 40 inch length modules. Positively charged cartridge for filtration in ultrapure liquid systems Gelman Sciences' new Suporf l o w 0.03 # m p o s i t i v e l y charged cartridge is claimed to offer exceptional Row rates and particle retention, increasing the filtration system efficiency. The cartridge combines a single layer of the advanced 0.1 #m Supor membrane, which acts as a prefilter over a positively charged 0.03 pm Supor membrane layer. The positively charged layer binds negatively charged p a r t i c u l a t e s such as colloids and bacteria, so m e e t i n g t h e m o s t stringent requirements in ultrapure liquid filtration app l i c a t i o n s . Preconditioning of each cartridge with 18 Mfl cm deionised water assures cleanliness and quick recovery to background.
Gelman Sciences tests the cartridges for 100% integrity during manufacture, in order to guarantee consistent and reliable performance. Two m a t e r i a l s of c o n s t r u c t i o n , advanced Supor m e m b r a n e (polyethersulphone), and p o l ~ r o p y l e n e used for the housing meet USP Class VI121 ° Plastics tests for biosafety. Suporflow 0.03 /~m cartridges are available in 10, 20, 30 and 40 inch lengths. Gelman Sciences Ltd, Brackmills Bu.viness Park, Caswell Road, Northampton NN4 0EZ, UK.
