producl review Zilog peripherals High speed versions of Z80 peripheral circuits that will enable users to upgrade existing systems and design new high performance systems were announced by Z/log recently. The new peripherals, part of the ZSOB family, run at a clock rate of 6 MHz compared to the 2.5 and 4 MHz rates of earlier versions. They are designed to work in conjunction with the 6 MHz Z80B CPU introduced earlier this year and are pin- and software-compatible with the earlier versions. They include a PIO parallel input/output controller, CTC counter/ timer circuit, SIO serial input/output
controller and a DART dual asynchronous receiver/transmitter. Another peripheral device for the Z8000 as well as the zg0, the Z8036 has been announced in sample quantities. This is a general purpose peripheral circuit combining counter/ timer, parallel I/O and interrupt controller functions. It was previously delivered only to selected customers, but will now be made available to a broad customer base. There are two versions: Z8036 for multiplexed address/data buses such as that of the Z8000 and Z8536 for nonmultiplexed CPUs such as the Z80.

Retrofit signature analysis for 6800s Hewlett-Packard have introduced a device making it possible to troubleshoot products based on the 6800 microprocessor quickly and economically using signature analysis (SA) even though the exercise routines and other provisions for SA were not initially designed into the product. The user plugs the product's 6800 into the HP 5001A microprocessor exerciser and then plugs the 5001A cable into the (now vacant) microprocessor socket in the product. The 5001A takes control of the product's buses and runs test stimulus programs from its own ROM while an HP 5004A signature analyser takes signatures at designated circuit points for each test stimulus. These signatures help pinpoint malfunctions down to the component level. Operating modes include: • 51 preprogrammed test stimuli • custom test stimulus programs via external ROMs • single signature tests • bus signature outputs • qualify input • gating signal outputs for a signature analyser This retrofit enables troubleshooting even though the product has not been designed for SA and costs less than providing test stimuli through incircuit emulation. The 5001A is also a useful tool for engineers designing

AMI emulator An emulator introduced by AMI Microsystems for their $2150 singlechip microcomputer provides pin-forpin cmulation of all the functional capabilities of the S2150 in a system design. Designated SES 2150 it is a boardlevel device which plugs directly into the microcomputer socket in an engineering prototype, and permits functional system checks of software designs. It contains 2 kbyte EPROM (2716) and provision is made for powering the unit from a separate power supply. This eliminates the possibility of distorting the prototype system's characteristics. SES 2150 appears t~ the system as an $2150 microcompul.er, operating from its internal 1._% ROM or the $2000 operating on its 1k ROM.

Zilog cross-software
HP's 500I A retrofit signature analysis device SA into a product, which again is less expensive in terms of test equipment. By observing the effect of the programmed stimuli on the product, the designer can select appropriate test routines for inclusion in the product firmware. Future versions of the microprocessor exerciser will be introduced to work with products based on the 8080, 8085 and Z80. The UK price is £ 4 8 0 . Z/log's Z8000 cross-software package is being offered with its source code. The package enables PDP-11 users to develop code for the Z8000. The source code version is available at the original price of the object code version. For users who do not need the source code, an object code version is available at a reduced price. Both versions of the software are available to universities at a discount. The package includes a compiler for C language, a code optimizer for the C compiler, Z8000 assembler, linkel, and an upload/download program compatible with Z/log's Z8000 development module. The package runs on Western Electric Company's seventh edition of the UNIX time sharing system. UNIX software runs on DEC PDP-11/44, PDP-11/45 and PDP-11/70 systems. (Z/log (UK) Ltd,
