The author points out the value of being able to access patents information from all over the world, and shows how this can be done using online files from Derwent Inc. Files discussed are the Electrical Patents Index (EPI), Patent Intelligence, US Patent Files and Biotechnology Abstracts. Possible future enhancements are outlined. 3. Legal Issues of Downloading Online Search Results. B. G. Inkellis. Oiline ‘82 Conference Proceedings, Atlanta, GA, USA, l-3 November 1982. Online (USA) 1982, pp. 91-92. Considers legal aspects of downloading online search results. Downloading is defined, statutory issues are described (the Copyright Act), the case law is discussed (none!) and some further thoughts are given.

This book is a beginner’s guide to the skills necessary for the retrieval of information from computerized bibliographic files, with special emphasis on techniques of online interactive searching. It is designed to serve as a self-instruction manual, and, as such, to encompass both the theoretical and the practical. 2. Making Sense of the Tower of Patent Babel. J. L. Forman. 4. Online Patent Searching-the Realities. S. M. Kaback (Analytical & Information Div., Exxon Res. & Engng. Co., Linden, NJ, USA). Online ‘82 Conference Proceedings, Atlanta, GA, USA, l-3 November 1982. Online (USA), 1982, pp. 157-159. Discusses online searching for patents, in particular two test searches carried out on the CASearch, WPI, CLAIMS Uniterm and APIPAT files. Both searches were in the area of petrochemical engineering. The results showed that no single database contained all the references, so that multiple file use is needed. 5. An Aid to Calculatine Search Costs Online. N. R. Smith (Siience Library, University College, Cardiff). Aslib Proceedings, March 1983, Vol. 35, No. 3, pp. 123-131. A simple model has been developed that enables the online searcher to calculate the total cost of a search at any point during the search. The parameters of the model are simply the online search time and the number of references that the searcher intends to print. The model can be represented graphically or in a discrete tabular form, as the searcher requires, and should be applicable to bibliographic databases on most retrieval systems. It should be particularly useful to searchers who have to work within financial constraints.

6. Full Text Online Patent Searching: Results of a USPTO Exoeriment. D. Stein. W. Parker, C. Hollan an’d A. Kiron. Online ‘82 Conference Proceedings, Atlanta, GA, USA, l-3 November 1982. Online (USA) 1982, pp. 289-294.

Discusses studies to evaluate hands-on use by patents examiners of online text database. The project includes a study of concept representation in patent full text, online searching by examiners of the entire full patent text, examiner online searching of commercially available patents databases. 7. Free Text Searching - Limitations and possibilities from the Point of View of Information Linguistics. C. Schwarz. Nuchr. Dok. (Germany), December 1982, Vol. 33, No. 6, pp. 228-236, in German. Information retrieval systems are characterized by their special challenges with respect to text data. The textual content must be analyzed for retrieval purposes. To achieve this end, several standard techniques exist. Their problems are shown and more sophisticated methodological approaches are discussed. It is argued that complex methods in the field of information linguistics must be considered very carefully. Their implementation should be envisaged only for well-defined applications. 8. Several Approaches for Improving User Cordiality in the Design of On-line Systems for Novice Users. S. E. Selander (MITRE Corp., McLean, VA, USA). Comput. Pers. (USA), November 1982, Vol. 9, No. 2, pp. 18-21. This paper presents several factors to be considered when designing a novice usermachine interface for an on-line system. These include user objectives, current procedures for processing the data, tutorial aids, database organization and human factors related to ease of terminal use. Various examples from recent experience are given to illustrate some of these points. 9. Can a Standard for an Online Common Command Language be Developed? P. A. Cochrane. Online (USA), January 1983, Vol. 7, No. 1, pp. 36-37. This is a working paper from ANS Committee Z-39 Subcommittee G on standard terms, abbreviations and symbols for use in interactive information retrieval. The paper asks readers to write in with their thoughts on the standardization issue. 10. On the Utilisation of the VINITI Magnetic-Tape Services. W. Peter and B. Garrels

Supplying well over one million references per year, the VINITI magnetic-tape services provide a solid foundation for the automated information processing coping with the constantly increasing world-wide stock of knowledge.
