Professor R. Zaks Universite de Complegne B.P. 233 60206 CompiSgne, France Dear Rodnay: I am writing to inform you of our plans for the Third Annual Symposium on Computer Architecture to be held on January ]9-21, 1976 at the Fort Harrison Jack Tar Hotel in Clearwater, Florida. The co-chairmen will be Professor Michael Flynn of Stanford University and Professor Oscar Garcia of the University of South Florida. The first day, January 19, will be devoted to a tutorial on a topic of current interest. As you recall our tutorial on Microcomputer Structure held at this year's symposium was extremely popular and well received. The Symposium on Computer Architecture is the only forum whose central theme is the theory and practice of computer and digital system organization. Topics covered include: Hardware/Firmware/Software Architectural Interactions Microcomputer System Architecture I/O Architecture Maxicomputers Multiprocessors Distributed Function Architectures Computer Networks High Level Language Machines Measurement and Performance Evaluation Design Automation of Digital Systems Description, Analysis, Synthesis, and Simulation Tools Special Purpose Architectures Computer Structures Education We are particularly interested in receiving papers from European authors relating to proposed or existing systems. Potential authors should be encouraged to confrom to the paper format established by previous Computer Architecture symposia and described in the booklet, "Information for IEEE Authors," available from the IEEE Editorial Department, 345 East 47th Street, New York, New York, 10017. That is, the papers should have an abstract, an introduction and survey of previous related work, their results, and conclusions. References to easily obtainable papers are also desirable.
-

The abstract, of less than two hundred words, and four double spaced typewritten copies of the manuscript (not to exceed twenty pages) should be submitted by August ], ]975 to: Professor Dan Siewiorek Program Chairman Computer Science Department Carnegie-Mellon University Pittsburgh, Pa. ]52]3 USA All submissions will be acknowledged and authors will be notified of the action on their papers by October ]st. At that time instructions will be mailed on the format of the papers to be print ed in the Proceedings of the symposium. The final papers will be due on November ]5, ]975 so that all printed material may be distributed at the time of the conference. We would appreciate it if you could make this information available to interested colleagues. Sincerely,
Daniel P. S iewiorek DPS/dmj

The microcomputer is ushering in new and e x c i t i n g e l e c t r o n i c system design p o s s i b i l i t i e s .
Following the w i l d f i r e success of the f i r s t
generation
of microprocessors, many semiconductor manufacturers are now developing increasingly sophisticated computers in extremely small packages - the day of the powerful "processor on a chip" has arrived~ This three day course being held for s c i e n t i s t s , engineers and managers by the Polytechnic of Central London at the Congress Palace in Florence, Italy -
n association with Florence University's Faculty of Engineering -
presents a thorough i n t r o d u c t i o n to the explosive technology of microcomputers and t h e i r applications. There is p a r t i c u l a r emphasis on bringing the a t t r i b u t e s of microprocessors and f u l l
microcomputer systems into perspective, from
both technical and economic standpoints, r e l a t i v e to hard-wired logic systems on the one hand, and the larger-scale minicomputer systems, on the other. The course begins with an introduction to microprocessor devices and microcomputer systems. Since device a v a i l a b i l i t y
is a prime consideration in
newly-emerging technology areas, a very extensive and d e f i n i t i v e two-part s~rvey of the microprocessors currently in commercial production is then

presented. Next the closely inter-related matters of hardware and software features are treated. Technical and non-technical factors to be considered in the overall design and implementation of microcomputer systems are given, followed by a sequence of several case studies of systems previously developed for applications ranging from data communications to "microperipherals". On the final day of the course a forum focussing on the anticipated value of microcomputers to industry is held which, in conjunction with two workshop sessions during the course, provides for l i v e l y discussion of the course content.
