An Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes,

Volume 7 of this excellent series contains additional karyotypic data of 50 species representing the following orders: Marsupialia, Insectivora, Dermoptera, Chiroptera, Rodentia, Cetacea, Pinnipedia, Perissodactyia, Artiociactyla and Primates. The information can readily be integrated with the folios from Volumes 1-6. Volume 7 also contains a cumulative list of contents as well as a valuable cumulative index of vernacular names. In addition, a substantial list of references is included which are designed to be added to, and up-date, the bibliography of previous volumes. The only criticism which one might have is that the quality of some of the photographs has clearly suffered during reproduction and printing. However, the volume is a credit to the compiling ability of the authors who have collected material from a wide variety of sources. The information is well presented and will be of great value to all those interested in chromosomes. R. L.

Vol. 14 Supplement

Part 2.

edited by R. A. Abramovitch, John Wiley and Sons Inc., New York and Toronto, 1974. pp. xvi + 661, price g31.00. The continuing growth and importance of Heterocyclic Chemistry is amply reflected in this volume which is the second supplement to the series of four volumes under the editorship of E. Klingsberg, which appeared some thirteen years ago. That this supplement is needed is attested to by the references quoted, which in each chapter outnumber those listed in the respective chapters of the original volume. This volume differs from the original in that it contains only four chapters, quatemary pyridines being dealt with in Part 1, while nitropyridines and their reduction products are to appear in Part 3. Some two-thirds of the book are taken up by the first two chapters which deal with pyridine N-oxides (R. A. Abramovitch and E. M. Smith) and alkylpyridines and arylpyridines (R. G. Micetich) respectively. The remainder of the book consists of chapters on halopyridines and organometallic compounds of pyridines by M. M. Boudakian and M. L. Yale, the latter author being the sole survivor from the original volume. Each chapter contains a multitude of informative, well laid-out, and highly
